This post is also available in: Español

This year is going to be good, you’ll see. As good and beautiful as the Argentine Patagonia? Hard question! Let’s let you decide that. We propose a little game: we tell you everything about the Argentine Patagonia and you decide if this year is going to be as good as this paradise of the South American continent.

We will tell you about its extension, its cities, the climate, when to travel, what to see, etc. Our intention is not to leave anything out to make it a little difficult, otherwise it is not exciting!

Where is Argentine Patagonia

Argentine Patagonia is a wide extension that covers practically all the southern half of the Argentine Republic, in the tip of the continent. It extends over 930.638 square kilometers, larger than Venezuela!

What to see in Argentine Patagonia

Although you could find thousands of magic places in Argentinean Patagonia (you have already seen their extension) we are going to mention the most outstanding places, under our point of view, for their beauty.

San Carlos de Bariloche

It is the gateway to Argentine Patagonia and you can imagine that it is not the city itself that will surprise you the most, but its surroundings. Stop! We have not said that you should not visit the city, in fact, you can not miss its cathedral, Our Lady of Nahuel Huapi, and the square of the Civic Center of Bariloche, declared a national historic monument.

From Bariloche you can visit the 7 lakes of Argentine Patagonia and reach the town of Villa Traful, a classic tour through the Andean forests of Argentine Patagonia. On the way, you will have the opportunity to visit three cities, two national parks, and eight lakes. Eight? That’s it.

Ushuaia

Ushuaia is also known as the city of the end of the world. This nickname may scare you a little bit, but it is not that it is an apocalyptic city. Being in the most extreme part, Ushuaia is considered the end of the world, literally. Wish the end of the world was as charming as Ushuaia is!

Green in spring, blue in summer, ochre in autumn and white in winter. Ushuaia is a city of colors and an incomparable intensity. Walking by its streets is a true privilege and it is that the mountains are always by your side. If you are not satisfied with the company of the mountains you can visit the spectacular Escondido and Fagnano lakes.

San MartĂn de los Andes

San Martin de los Andes is a small town on the shores of Lake Lacar, in northwestern Patagonia. It is surrounded by lakes, volcanoes, high snow-capped mountains, and some incredible routes. It is a place worth visiting both in summer and in winter, its charming little houses will surprise you whether it is cold or hot!

Fly fishing in San MartĂn de los Andes has become a great attraction. It is undoubtedly a paradise for fishing fans. In this area there are six rivers with important fishing spots, very suitable for fly fishing technique.

Puerto Madryn

Puerto Madryn is the second largest fishing port in the country and the best place to see penguins in Argentina. It is an ideal option to observe nature in its wildest life. The penguins of Punta Tombo natural reserve are waiting for you!

El Chaltén

El Chaltén is the Trekking Capital of Argentina and is less than 200 kilometers from Perito Moreno. It is the gateway to the magical landscapes of Southern Patagonia and it is a complex place due to the terrain conditions, but it was also complex due to political issues. We are talking about a historical conflict that goes back to the end of the 19th century between Chile and Argentina. Does it get interesting?

What the famous ‘Treaty of Limits’ and the 1978 Treaty of Peace and Friendship signed in the Vatican itself were unable to solve and appease in 1881, was forced in 1985 by the creation of a small invented town to claim the rights to this frontier land before Chile did.

Perito Moreno

In Los Glaciares National Park there are many glaciers, as you can imagine. The most spectacular is the Perito Moreno, which is considered the eighth wonder of the world. It is 5 kilometers wide, 74 meters high and has an ice cap of 170 meters deep.

You can stare at them from the footbridges, but if you want more, it is possible to walk Perito Moreno entirely. If you don’t know what trekking to do in Perito Moreno, do them all. Just kidding! One is enough, why do you think there are restrictions and it is not suitable for anyone? We don’t want to scare you, but if you want to opt for a quieter plan you can navigate Los Glaciares National Park and take very good photos.

Weather in Argentine Patagonia

In general terms the climate is dry and cold. Having said this, it is worth noting that in the north the temperatures are more moderate and in the south more intense, but let’s go into detail:

The wind is constant both in the north and south during all seasons, but between March and April, there is some respite. Another of the peculiarities of Argentine Patagonia is the variability of climates on the same day. You can wake up with the sun, have lunch with clouds, have a snack with the wind, and have dinner with snow.

When is the best time to visit Argentine Patagonia

It is a curious question, is there a better time to visit Argentine Patagonia? We think that the best time and place to do something is up to you. Winter is fantastic for skiing, El Chaltén is full of colors in spring and autumn, in summer could maybe take place the Perito Moreno detachment, but only maybe.

You didn’t expect it to be this good. Well, it’s already clear that the bar for this year 2021 is very high. With all this information we hope to have helped you imagine the Argentine Patagonia in its greatest splendor and thus be able to answer the initial question: Will your 2021 be more exciting than the Argentine Patagonia itself?
