Of course, before embarking on the adventure you should get to know a little more about this green country. We are happy to tell you the fun facts about Costa Rica.

The green country

One of the fun facts aboout Costa Rica is that it has managed to become “the green country”. What does this mean?

Costa Rica has 6% of the world’s biodiversity. That’s why we recommend Caño Island snorkeling to enjoy its coral reefs where there are more than 60 species, it will be a unique experience.

To complete the experience it is interesting to visit Corcovado National Park, one of the largest where you can enjoy the terrestrial fauna.

In addition, 99% of its energy comes from renewable sources (solar, biomass, wind, hydroelectric and geothermal energy), it is forbidden to search for oil, hunt for profit or sport and by 2021 aims to neutralize carbon emissions.

One thing is clear, Costa Rica proposed to help the environment and become a green power. Has it succeeded? We’ll have to travel to Costa Rica to find out.

Sunrise and sunset always at the same time

Costa Rica enchants with its beautiful sunrises and sunsets from the beach. You will be able to enjoy them always at the same time, since you will be near the equator.

The Ticos

The Population of Costa Rica or Tiquicia are called ticos. This affectionate name comes from the fact that the entire population used the diminutives ending in -tico or -tica (hermanitico and chiquitico), instead of -tito and -tita, which are used in more Spanish-speaking countries.

Costa Rican happiness

Another fun fact is that Costa Ricans have a long life (many surpass 90 and 100 years), could it be because of the happiness so characteristic of the country?

When you walk through the streets of the country you will hear the expression “pura vida” everywhere, as it is used to say hello, how are you or to cheer up your loved ones. Any excuse is good to use it!

The curious streets with no name

Isn’t it amazing? In Costa Rica the streets don’t have names so you’ll have to guide yourself with GPS or in a more fun and Costa Rican way, following the indications of the Ticos 😉

The surprising volcanic activity

Does the fun facts about Costa Rica never cease to amaze you? You should know that this country has 5 active volcanoes. These are the Poas, Arenal, Rincon de la Vieja, Irazu and Turrialba.

The Arenal is the most famous and recognized for its eruption in 2010. But if you want to see more than just a volcano, Poás has a boiling acid lake and Irazú a stunning blue-green lake.

Costa rican Navy

One of the most curious facts is that Costa Rica has had no army since 1948 after the Civil War. The country’s president Jose Figueres abolished the army and stated that he did not want an army of soldiers, but of educators.

Also, the country takes pride in not having armed troops and therefore celebrates Army Abolition Day on December 1.

Education is the most important thing

The country’s literacy rate is 95%, surprising?

The government encourages education for all children with free compulsory education. There are even classes in the suburbs so that children far from the cities can learn.

It seems that what was agreed in 1948 has been fulfilled.

The curious production of pineapple

This country is the primary producer and exporter of pineapple in the world. Behind pineapple are bananas and coffee, they occupy the second and third most exported agricultural products in Costa Rica.

McDonald’s in Costa Rica

Did you know that Costa Rica was the second country to enjoy McDonald’s? Well that’s right, this nation was the first to have an establishment of this multinational, obviously not counting the United States.
