This post is also available in: Español

Ecuador is one of the most diverse places in the world. Can you realize, that in such a small country you can find 30 volcanoes, the Amazon jungle, an ocean with unique nature and treasures of the old Inca civilization? And all this is located exactly in the center of the world – on the equator. If this doesn’t appeal to your imagination enough, think about how it feels to stand on top of one of the highest active volcanoes in the world – Cotopaxi, and a few days later on the farthest point on Earth from the center of our planet – the Chimborazo peak!

The mountains of Ecuador are characterized by very unpredictable weather – very often shrouded by dense fog during the day and night. The best time to reach them is June-July and December-January. Ecuadorian volcanoes are close to the equator and their altitude makes it necessary to be ready for low temperatures, which at night and near the top can drop to -15 degrees. At such altitudes it is not easy – breathing is very difficult not only because of the height but also because of the cold wind, which is why such an expedition requires preparation.

The Chimborazo volcano which is 6310m is not only the highest in Ecuador, but also one of the highest volcanoes in the world. Also, because it is very close to the equator, it is the highest mountain in the world, counting from the core of the globe. Considering the distance from the center of the Earth, Chimborazo is 2150 meters higher than Mount Everest. Until the middle of the 19th century the mountain was considered to be the highest in the world. The climb to the Chimborazo peak is moderately difficult, the road is demanding but classic. This is a snowy mountain slope with an average slope of 40 degrees, with some steep sections. On Chimborazo sometimes there is more ice, and on the way you can encounter fissures. It is an ideal peak for slightly more experienced and demanding travelers.

However, if you are not very experienced in this type of expedition – much better and easier to climb will be Cotopaxi (5897m)! This is an evenly and at the same time lightly sloped volcano. On the way you can encounter a lot of fissures – some of them need a ladder to pass. Cotopaxi is not only beautiful in itself, but the main road is one of the most picturesque and beautiful paths because of the glacier shape. At the top you can see a “flaming” crater, sounds amazing, doesn’t it?

Ecuador is a fascinating country that attracts thousands of tourists every year. If you are a climber or a passionate hiker, this is the place for you – you can book a trip to Cotopaxi or Chimborazo on our website today. There is no second place in the world with so many volcanoes in such a small area. Ecuador offers really amazing climbing places, you definitely need to visit it!
