Driving from Reykjavik to Jökulsárlón

Renting a car in Iceland is also a comfortable option and gives you more independence. However, you have to know that the journey takes about 6 hours and you have to take into account the weather.

Bus from Reykjavik to Jökulsárlón

You can also combine bus and then car. There are 4 possible combinations where the final journey is always the same: by car from Kirkjubæjarklaustur to Jökulsárlón (1h 35m approx.) and the price is around 23$ (20 EUR).

The main differences of the 4 combinations are the departure, from where in Reykjavik the bus departs, and the number of transports taken. The first departs from Mjódd and you will have to take 3 buses in total. The second from Reykjavík Campsite, the northern part of the capital and you’ll take the same number of buses (3).

Talking about the other 2 remaining combinations: they consist of taking 4 buses and the final journey by car (same as the rest). You can departing from Kringlan (line 3) or from Háaleitisbraut / Lágmúli (line 11 or 4).

Get to Jökulsárlón by taking the plane

The first option is a total journey of 3 and a quarter hours. Taking a plane first to Hornafjordur (HFN), then a cab for about 29$ (€25) to Höfn í Hornafirði, where you’ll take bus (51) to Jökulsárlón. The bus will cost you about 17$ (15€) and the trip takes about 1 hour.

On the other hand, after being 1 hour on the plane from Reykjavik to Egilsstadir (EGS), you can drive your car to Jökulsárlón. This road trip is about 4 hours 167mi (270km) and the fuel is around 46$ (40€) or 58$ (50€). So you would be traveling for approximately 5 hours.

The planes prices may vary depending on the time of year you want to travel, so we recommend you look at the tickets well in advance to get them cheaper.
