Is it worth going by train? The standard answer is – depends! This is a great option for those who don’t like physical activity, aren’t in good shape, or because of health issues, simply cannot burden their body with such an effort. Moreover, it’s also a good choice for those with limited time and who just want to tick Machu Picchu on their travel bucket list. The train allows for a one-day back and forth trip, however, it’s a very restrictive and intensive option! In Peru, you can choose from three different carriers – Inca Rail, Peru Rail and the most luxury train to Machu Picchu – Belmond Hiram Bingham. Each of these provides a very good standard and unique atmosphere, but the choice is up to you and the possibility of your wallet. In that case, how much does the train to Machu Picchu cost and which one you should choose?

Inca Rail

During the search for a train to Machu Picchu, you have to choose one from the three stops – Cusco (San Pedro Station), Ollantaytambo, and the most popular option, Poroy, which tourists can reach from the center of Cusco by taxi or minibus. The carrier offers three types of train services, which all go to Aguas Calientes. The options vary in price for a reason, each ¨service level¨ includes different amenities:

The Voyager – the most economical option, preferred by independent travelers and backpackers. The wagon has a capacity of 42 people and includes comfortable seats with tables, as well as wide windows that allow you to enjoy the scenery. Besides, passengers can expect snacks and some drinks. One-way trip costs around $60.

The 360° – this experience is very different from the rest. First of all, there are much bigger, wider windows and a glazed roof. This simple trick gives tourists a much better view of the landscape – now you can admire the Andes, Rio Vilcanota and incredible rock tunnels. Photography lovers and people who care about a unique visual experience definitely will enjoy that ride! There are also small conveniences, such as USB ports for charging devices, drinks and a lunch box. Machu Picchu train tickets in this class cost around $80.

The Firstclass – as the name suggests, this is a luxury train to Machu Picchu! Maximum comfort for a maximum price. Amazingly comfortable seats, live music, 3-course Peruvian menu, pisco sour tasting, cooking course, children’s zone, and unique observatory! The price also includes the bus from Aguas Calientes to the gates of Machu Picchu. Such a pleasure costs $200. There is also an all-inclusive option on the website, which includes an entrance ticket to the ruins, but we have to pay an additional $100. Expensive, but it’s definitely worthwhile to go on such a trip once in your life.

Besides, the company characteristically designed the interior of the carriages, adding a traditional Peruvian atmosphere, which is an additional attraction for travelers.
