When is the best time to do the Lost City Trek Colombia?
The best time to join the Lost City Trek Colombia 4-Day Tour is between December and September, when the weather is drier, and the trails are easier to hike.
The trail to the Ciudad Perdida closes every October for maintenance and to allow the indigenous communities who live in the area to rest and perform traditional ceremonies, so tours are not available during that month.
Keep in mind that the rainy seasons (April–May and October–November) make the route muddier, the river crossings higher, and the trek more demanding.
☀️ Howlanders' Tip: The most comfortable months to hike are January to March and June to August, when the jungle is lush but the paths are still manageable. For more details, check out our post about the Lost City Trek weather and what to expect each season.
What to pack for the Lost City Trek
Packing smart is key to enjoying your Lost City Trek Colombia tour. A heavy backpack will slow you down, but missing essentials can make things uncomfortable.
We recommend bringing a 30–40 L backpack with only what you really need:
- Quick-dry, breathable clothing
- Comfortable sandals for the camp
- Headlamp or flashlight
- Insect repellent and sunscreen
- Lightweight rain jacket or poncho
- Swimsuit for the river stops
- Microfiber towel
- Refillable water bottle or filter
💡 Howlanders' Tip: You can leave your main luggage safely in Santa Marta before starting the trek. Check our detailed post on what to pack for the Lost City Trek for more recommendations.
4-day or 5-day Lost City Trek: which one should you choose?
At Howlanders, we offer several Lost City Trek Colombia tours — the same route completed in 3, 4 or 5 days, all led by local indigenous guides.
The Ciudad Perdida 4-day trek is the most popular option. It covers the same distance with longer hiking days, perfect for fit travelers with limited time.
The Ciudad Perdida 5-day trek follows a slower pace, giving you more time to rest, swim in the rivers, and enjoy the jungle scenery and local communities. It’s ideal if you prefer a more relaxed experience or are traveling during the rainy season.
Both versions include accommodation in camps, full meals, and guided hikes. Read our post comparing the 4-day and 5-day Lost City Trek to find the best fit for your travel style.
