This tour is the best way to visit Machu Picchu and get to discover the town of Aguas Calientes.

Departing from Cuzco, you will go with a minibus to Ollantaytambo, from where you will take the emblematic train to Machu Picchu town, also known as Aguas Calientes. When you arrive, a guide will be waiting for you to take you to your hotel, he will give you directions to all the activities you can do during your free time that afternoon, such as visiting the Alcomayo waterfalls and the hot springs.

The next day, you will get up very early in the morning so that you can get to Machu Picchu in the first few shifts. You will take a guided tour of the Inca citadel and enjoy discovering Machu Picchu on your own. To finish this experience, you will take the train to return to Ollantaytambo and the transfer to Cuzco.

Discover how these two days will be in detail below:

Tour itinerary

todayDAY 1 Cusco - Aguas Calientes

Initial elevation: : 3.400 masl (Cusco) Highest elevation: 2.972 masl Machu Picchu elevation: 2.430 masl Difficulty: Easy
access_time9 : 00 AM

The day before the tour starts, there will be a small meeting with the guide in Cusco, who will give you all the entrances and accesses, explain all the details of the tour and indicate the exact pick-up time for the start of the tour. Also, he will explain you how to organize your visit to the Alcomayo waterfalls and to the Aguas Calientes hot springs if you want to do it.

The day the tour starts, the guide will pick you up at your accommodation in Cusco at the agreed time, depending on your train schedule. A minibus will take you to the Ollantaytambo station, and you will be shown which train to take to Aguas Calientes. The journey takes one and a half hours through spectacular landscapes with views of the snow-capped mountains, the Vilcanota River, the semi-tropical zone and the high jungle area. Please note that the guide will not travel with you on the train.

access_time1 : 30 PM

When you arrive in Aguas Calientes, they will be waiting for you at the train station to take you to your accommodation and will indicate the exact time of collection for the next day. In addition, you will be given directions for the afternoon activities: a one and a half hour route to the large Alcomayo waterfalls and then rest and relax in the hot springs of Machu Picchu Pueblo.

It is advisable to go to the hot springs before 3:00 p.m. to enjoy the experience to the fullest since later it is more difficult to access due to the number of travelers.

todayDAY 2 Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu - Cusco

Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu - Cuzco Elevation Machu Picchu: 2.430 masl Difficulty: Easy
access_time4 : 00 AM

Breakfast will be early at the hotel, you will be picked up and together with the rest of the travellers, you will go to the bus stop. The exact time will depend on the time of the entrance to Machu Picchu. With luck and if the weather allows it, we will arrive at Machu Picchu when it is already starting to get light to see how the clouds clear and the sun rises in the horizon, illuminating the whole citadel.

Once in Machu Picchu, you will do a guided tour of two hours with the guide in a small group of about 8 travelers. During the first part of the tour, you will have more time to take pictures, as the upper area of Machu Picchu offers the best views and it is in the second part of the tour where you will really get into details. At the end of the 2 hour guided tour, you will have free time to enjoy the lower part of Machu Picchu, as the upper part can only be visited with a guide and the tour is limited.

access_time1 : 30 PM

At this point, the guide has said goodbye to the group and you will be the one to decide when to return to Aguas Calientes by bus, since you have your bus tickets and the bus leaves every few minutes from the door of Machu Picchu. You will have free time to eat at one of the restaurants in Aguas Calientes until the train leaves, which will take you back to Ollantaytambo (time subject to availability). Upon arrival, a transfer will be waiting for you to take you back to Cusco, where you will arrive between 6:00 and 9:00 p.m.

If you have selected the extra night in Aguas Calientes, you can enjoy the afternoon in the village, taking the train the next day.
