Tour itinerary
Day 1: Puerto Maldonado - Lodge - Monkey Island
Arrival in Puerto Maldonado and transfer to the lodge.
Upon arrival in Puerto Maldonado, you’ll be picked up at the airport or bus station. After a quick check-in at the office, you’ll head to Puerto Capitanía, where you’ll board a motorboat to the lodge.
The one-hour navigation along the Madre de Dios River is the perfect introduction to the Peruvian Amazon, offering your first glimpse of its lush vegetation and wildlife.
Upon arrival at the Amazon lodge in Puerto Maldonado, you’ll be greeted with a refreshing tropical juice and have time to settle into your room and relax.

Visit to Monkey Island
After lunch, you’ll cross the river to explore Monkey Island, located right in front of the lodge. This small natural reserve is home to several species of monkeys, including playful capuchins that roam freely among the trees.
After your visit, you’ll return to the lodge to rest and enjoy the sounds of the jungle.

Nighttime caiman search
As night falls, get ready for an exciting night boat ride in search of white caimans along the riverbanks, guided by your local expert. With a bit of luck, you might also spot capybaras, the largest rodents in the world.
You’ll return to the lodge for dinner and a well-deserved rest, surrounded by the peace and magic of the Amazon rainforest.

Day 2: Sandoval Lake - Return to Puerto Maldonado
Excursion to Sandoval Lake
After breakfast at the lodge, you’ll begin a 3-kilometer (1.8-mile) hike through the rainforest to reach the stunning Sandoval Lake, one of the largest and most beautiful lakes in the Tambopata National Reserve.
Once there, you’ll board a small boat to explore its calm waters and observe the incredible wildlife that inhabits the area — colorful birds, playful monkeys, and, with some luck, families of giant otters.
All of this surrounded by the sounds of the jungle and the reflections of the lush vegetation on the lake’s surface.

Return to the lodge and end of the tour
After the excursion, you’ll head back to the Amazon lodge in Puerto Maldonado to enjoy a traditional regional lunch.
In the afternoon, you’ll return to Puerto Maldonado, where your unforgettable adventure in the heart of the Peruvian Amazon comes to an end.
