DAY 1 Puerto Maldonado - Lodge - Monkey Island

Pick up and arrival in Puerto Maldonado

After pick up at the airport or bus station, you will go to the office for registration and then head to the Puerto Capitania pier to get to the lodge. The boat ride will last about one hour. Once you arrive at the lodge, you will have a welcome meeting with a refreshing fruit juice and you can settle into your room.

Monkey Island

After lunch, you will visit the well known Monkey Island which is located right in front of the lodge, across the Madre de Dios River. Here you will be able to observe different species of monkeys such as the capuchin monkey family. Afterwards you will return to the lodge.

Searching for caimans in the Amazon rainforest

In search of caimans! Once it gets dark, you will go in search of white caimans together with your guide. They are usually found on sandbanks next to the river, so we recommend bringing a flashlight. You will also see the world's largest rodent: the capybara. You will return to the lodge for dinner and rest.

DAY 2 Sandoval Lake - Return to Puerto Maldonado

After breakfast, you will walk 3 kilometers through the dense rainforest until you reach Sandoval Lake, one of the largest lakes in the Tambopata National Reserve. Here you will board the boat, and walk along the length of the lake where you will observe a variety of birds and monkeys. You may also see a family of giant otters. You will return to the lodge for a typical lunch and in the afternoon you will return to the city of Puerto Maldonado.

What to bring to Puerto Maldonado 2-Day Jungle Tour

Puerto Maldonado is characterized by a humid and warm climate typical of the Peruvian Amazon. You will find temperatures between 20ºC (68ºF) and 40ºC (104ºF), dropping to 17ºC (62ºF) in the windy season (June and July). The rainy season is between December and March.

It will be important that you take with you light, comfortable, breathable and quick-drying clothing and footwear. Mosquito repellent, a hat or cap, sunglasses and a flashlight should not be missing in your suitcase. In addition, we recommend you to bring

The Puerto Maldonado Jungle Tour 2 Days includes pick-up and drop-off at the airport of Puerto Maldonado. To get to the city of Puerto Maldonado the most common way is to take a commercial flight from Lima with a stopover in the city of Cusco, with a duration of 90 minutes. These flights have daily departures.

It is also possible to reach the city of Puerto Maldonado by road in a bus trip of about 10 hours approximately from the city of Cusco. If you arrive in Puerto Maldonado by land you can request a pick up directly in the city.

    In order to better enjoy this tour, groups are reduced to a maximum of 8 people.
  • What time will I be picked up at the airport?

    The pick-up time at the airport will depend on the arrival time of your flight. You can indicate your flight schedule in the notes section of the booking form.
  • Do I have to carry all my luggage on the boat to the lodge?

    After picking you up at the airport, we will stop by the Puerto Maldonado office before going to the lodge. Any luggage that you do not need for your stay in the jungle can be safely stored at the office for easy transport by boat to the lodge.
  • What is the lodge like?

    The lodge is a complex of 18 buildings built entirely using wood from the region. It has 30 rooms (15 of them in the form of a cabin/bungalow), looby/bar, dining room, kitchen, swimming pool and common areas such as terrace with hammocks, or outdoor smoking area among others. All the rooms are completely protected by mosquito nets to prevent the entry of mosquitoes and other insects. The lodge is located on the banks of the Madre de Dios River and has the traditional and rustic design of the houses of the region built by the skilled masters of the Palmareal Community.

  • What are the lodge rooms like?

    The lodge has a total of 30 rooms, including single, double, matrimonial and family rooms. 15 of them have been built as a cabin/bungalow with private terrace. Fifteen of them have been built in the form of a cabin/bungalow with private terrace, all rooms have private bathrooms and water in the showers supplied by the Madre de Dios River (previously chlorinated and crystallized). All of them also have access to electricity by generator for 4 hours a day (5:00pm to 9:00pm). Like the rest of the lodge, the rooms are completely protected by mosquito nets to prevent mosquitoes and other insects from entering the lodge.

  • Will I have electricity?

    Yes, the lodge has an electric generator (fully encapsulated) used for short periods of approximately 4 hours (5:00pm to 9:00pm). Howlanders recommends that you take advantage of this time to charge your electronic devices. From 9:00 p.m. the lodge is illuminated by the dim and romantic light of kerosene lamps providing a magical atmosphere to the place. We also recommend that you don't forget to bring a flashlight in your suitcase.

  • Will I be covered?

    Yes, from the lodge facilities you will have access to the telephone network of your phone. The lodge does not have a public telephone or internet connection. Take advantage of these days to disconnect.

  • How is the meal included in the tour?

    The tour includes full board of 3 meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) served in the lodge dining room. The lodge serves buffet meals when more than 15 travelers stay at the lodge, and table service when the number is less than 15. Fresh water, coffee or tea, and soft drinks are offered during meals. Meals consist of salads, main courses and desserts combining regional, Peruvian and international cuisine. The lodge also has a bar service.

  • Is there a vegetarian menu option?

    Yes, it is possible to adapt the food to the needs of each traveler. We recommend that you inform us in advance of any dietary restrictions, allergies or special diets in order to program the supplies before your arrival at the Lodge.
