Refugio del Pilar We will start the hiking route at Refugio del Pilar, a popular recreational area where locals usually celebrate family lunches or small friend reunions in a beautiful natural setting. For us today this place will be the beginning of our trekking route on La Palma. We start!
Beginning of the route through the GR 131 trail We start our hike along the GR 131 trail following our mountain guide uphill, hiking around the Birigoyo mountain, an ancient volcanic cone. Here we can enjoy wonderful sights towards the north such as the Caldera de Taburiente or the Cima de la Isla (‚ÄúTop of the Island‚ÄĚ).
Valle de Aridane We’ll continue our route to find the Valle de Aridane, which comprises the towns of El Paso, Los LLanos y Tazacorte. Here we can use the lookouts to catch our breath while we enjoy the views of the old Tacande volcano. As you’ll observe throughout our hike, and on the Tacande volcano, Canary pine is abundant on the GR 131 trail. On the contrast, this pine will be absent once we get to the younger volcanoes that are the star of our tour; due to erosion, pine can’t grow on them.
First crater: Hoyo Negro After crossing a wooden bridge we reach the first crater of the day, Hoyo Negro. Get excited! Here we can really say we’re on the La Palma volcano route. From this point we’ll also be able to see some of the other craters we will visit throughout our hike.
Downhill the GR 131 trail After visiting all those magnificent craters we will continue our hike down the GR 131 towards Fuencaliente. During this downhill hike we will follow our guide through loose terrain of black volcanic sand, through which we will probably have go stop more than once to empty our boots out because sand gets everywhere.
Volcán Martín Before reaching Fuencaliente we will find the Martin volcano, the last crater in our tour. Its shape and colors make it one of the most beautiful volcanoes in the island. You will have the opportunity to hike to the top, if you wish, and enjoy the wonderful views of the southernmost point of the island from afar.
Last stop: Los Canarios town Hiking through pines we will reach the church of San Antonio, where we can lean onto the outside walls to empty the sand out of our boots for the last time before arriving to the town centre of Los Canarios. Here we will do the last stop of our tour to have a refreshing drink before saying goodbye.
Back to El Paso and La Palma After a well-deserved rest in Los Canarios, we will take the bus back to our meeting point in El Paso. If you select the extra Transport from and to your accommodation in La Palma, the bus will take you to your accomodation in La Palma, putting an end to our adventure through volcanoes.
