You will stay in cabins at Caiman Lodge, located within the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve, near Laguna Grande. TRANSPORTATION: The tour starts at Puente Cuyabeno. Please check the “Where does the tour start” section for full transportation details.
ACCOMMODATION: all rooms are private and include a private bathroom. Normally, all passengers on the same booking stay in the same room. If you’d like individual rooms, please contact us so we can arrange it.
ITINERARY: As this is an experience in the heart of the Amazon, the itinerary may vary depending on weather conditions, river levels, and wildlife activity. Animals are in their natural habitat, so sightings cannot be guaranteed.
NETWORK & INTERNET: There is no Wi-Fi at the lodge and mobile phone coverage is very limited or non-existent, allowing for a fully immersive nature experience.
INFRASTRUCTURE: Please note this is an adventure and nature tour in a remote area. Facilities are basic but comfortable, designed to minimize environmental impact.
VACCINATIONS: No mandatory vaccinations are required; however, it is recommended to consult your healthcare provider regarding yellow fever and malaria prevention.
Cancellation policy
- If you cancel at least 30 days or more before the start of the tour, you will receive 100% of the amount paid.
- If you cancel between 29 and 15 days before the start of the tour, you will receive 50% of the amount paid.
- If you cancel 14 days or less before the start of the tour, or in the event of a no-show, no refunds will be issued.
Tour itinerary
Day 1: Cuyabeno Bridge - Navigation on the river - Caiman Lodge - Laguna Grande
Pick-up at Puente Cuyabeno
You will meet the group at Puente Cuyabeno between 11:00 AM and 11:30 AM. After check-in at the Reserve office, your naturalist guide will give a brief introduction to the Cuyabeno Reserve, including key recommendations and helpful tips to begin your adventure.
Motor canoe ride on the Cuyabeno River
Next, you will begin a motorized canoe ride of approximately 2 hours along the Cuyabeno River to reach Caiman Lodge. During the journey, you will start discovering the Amazon rainforest flora and fauna. Depending on conditions, you may spot monkeys, birds, and other jungle wildlife along the way.

Arrival at Caiman Lodge
You will arrive at the lodge around 1:30 PM and have lunch. Afterwards, rooms will be assigned and you will have time to rest.
Canoe trip on Laguna Grande
At 4:30 PM, you will depart by motorized canoe to explore the flooded jungle. You will navigate through the Laguna Grande area, where you will have the opportunity to observe wildlife such as sloths, pink river dolphins, and birds. Afterwards, you will enjoy the sunset over the lagoon and, if conditions permit, you may be able to swim.
Dinner, welcome cocktail, and night canoe trip
In the evening, you will return to the lodge for dinner and enjoy a welcome cocktail. Afterwards, you will take a night canoe trip in search of caimans, snakes, and nocturnal birds.

Day 2: Canoe paddle - Hike through primary forest - Catamaran - Night walk
Breakfast, navigation, and hike through primary forest
At 7:00 AM, you will have breakfast at the lodge. At 8:00 AM, you will board a paddle canoe and navigate to one of the trails within the Cuyabeno Reserve. There, you will begin a hike of approximately 3 hours through primary rainforest.
During the hike, your guide will explain the ecology of the Amazon rainforest, the use of medicinal plants, the diversity of wildlife in the area, and the relationships between ecosystems in one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet.
Afterwards, you will return to the lodge for lunch and relax in the hammocks or in your room.
💡 TIP HOWLANDERS: During your stay in the Cuyabeno Reserve, wildlife observation requires patience and silence. We recommend moving slowly, avoiding loud noises, and always following your naturalist guide’s instructions to increase your chances of spotting monkeys, birds, pink river dolphins, and other animals in their natural habitat.

Catamaran tour
At 4:30 PM, you will take a catamaran tour. This is a calm, relaxing experience as you navigate through the reserve while continuing to observe wildlife such as pink river dolphins, monkeys, and birds. You will also enjoy the sunset and, if conditions permit, you may be able to swim.
Dinner and night walk
Dinner will be served at 7:30 PM. Afterwards, you will go on a night walk of approximately 1 hour in search of arachnids, amphibians, and, hopefully, nocturnal reptiles.

Day 3: Bird Tower - Siona Community of Puerto Bolivar - Laguna Grande

At 6:00 you will meet at the meeting point of the lodge. Weather permitting, you will go to the Caiman Bird Tower to observe different species of birds and enjoy the sunrise accompanied by coffee. At 8:00 a.m. you will return to the lodge for breakfast.
Visit to the Siona Community of Puerto Bolivar
At 9:00 a.m., you will depart downriver to the Siona community of Puerto Bolivar. The trip will take approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Upon arrival, a woman from the community will greet you and take you to a cassava plantation. There you will participate in the harvesting of the yucca and learn about the traditional process of preparing cassava, a flat bread made from yucca.
Afterwards, the guide will introduce you to one of the shamans of the Siona tribe in Ecuador. You will learn about their cosmovision, related to nature and the traditional use of ayahuasca. There will also be a part of an energetic cleansing ritual with chants transmitted by oral tradition.
Later you will make a brief tour of the surroundings in search of snakes and other animals that may appear during the visit. You will also visit a large ceibo tree, one of the most representative trees of the Amazon. At the end of the tour, you will have lunch and return to the lodge in the afternoon.
The entrance fee to visit the Siona community is not included.

Laguna Grande sunset tour
At 4:00 PM, you will take the final tour of Laguna Grande. During this excursion, you will look for dolphins and other jungle wildlife while enjoying the last Amazon sunset of your trip.
Return to the lodge, rest, and farewell dinner with cocktail
In the evening, you will return to the lodge, where you can relax in a hammock or enjoy a drink at the bar. At 7:30 PM, a special dinner will be served with your guide, where you will share your experiences from the tour and enjoy a farewell cocktail.

Day 4: Sunrise - Birdwatching - Return to Cuyabeno Bridge

At 5:30 AM, you will take a final outing to observe the sunrise and different bird species. At 8:00 AM, you will have breakfast at the lodge and prepare your luggage.
Return by canoe to Puente Cuyabeno and end of the tour
At 9:30 AM, you will begin your canoe ride back to Puente Cuyabeno. Upon arrival, you will receive a picnic lunch box.
Arrival at the bridge is expected between 11:00 AM and 11:30 AM, from where you can continue your journey to Lago Agrio or Quito, depending on the transportation you have booked. This marks the end of the Cuyabeno 4-Day Tour - Ecuador Amazon.

The climate in the Cuyabeno Wildlife Production Reserve is tropical, warm and very humid throughout the year, with temperatures between 24 °C and 32 °C. Rainfall is frequent even in the "dry" season, so the environment is usually humid and with a high presence of insects. Yes, as this is a nature tour in the Amazon, activities may vary depending on weather conditions, river level or the guide's recommendations.
Is there electricity, network and internet?
Yes, electricity is available at Caiman Lodge, although it is not available throughout the day, as it is powered by solar panels and is managed to save energy. Electricity is mainly available at night, approximately from 18:00 to 22:00, which allows charging devices such as cameras and cell phones. There is no wifi service at the lodge and, in general, cell phone signal is very limited or non-existent. Only in some cases, with a CNT SIM card, is it possible to obtain a signal from elevated areas such as the tower.
What is the level of difficulty of the tour?
The tour is of low to moderate difficulty. It includes short hikes through the jungle and canoe transfers, suitable for most people with basic physical condition.
Is it necessary to have previous experience in jungle activities?
No, no previous experience is required. All activities are guided by local experts who will accompany you and explain everything during the tour.
Is there Malaria or Dengue fever in Cuyabeno?
