DAY 1 Puerto Maldonado Airport - Lodge - Monkey Island

Pick-up at Puerto Maldonado airport

The guide will be waiting for you at the airport in Puerto Maldonado, to take you to the city of Puerto Maldonado (15 minutes), you will make a short stop at the office and then take the boat to the lodge. You will make a trip down the Madre de Dios River and in approximately 60 minutes you will arrive at the lodge. The lodge is located on the banks of the Madre de Dios River, 15 km. southwest of the city of Puerto Maldonado within the Tambopata National Reserve.

Upon arrival, you will be greeted with a fresh fruit juice, a welcome meeting, your luggage will be left in your room and lunch will be served.

Monkey Island 🐒

After lunch, you will visit Monkey Island located in the middle of the Madre de Dios River. Meet this popular tourist destination, the refuge of different species of Amazonian monkeys. You will be able to see the squirrel monkey, the capuchin monkey, the howler monkey or the spider monkey in their natural habitat. Afterwards you will return to the lodge.

Search for caimans 🐊

Before dinner, you will take a walk along the banks of the Madre de Dios River with flashlight to look for white caimans. You are also likely to see some capybara, the largest rodent in the world. You will return to the lodge, have dinner and rest.

DAY 2 Tambopata National Reserve - Lake Sandoval

The day begins! After breakfast at the lodge, you will start trekking through the lush vegetation of the Amazon rainforest. After 3 km of trekking, you will enter the Tambopata National Reserve.

Later in the afternoon, you will sail in small paddle boats on Sandoval Lake to observe a variety of bird and monkey species. You will probably see a family of endangered giant otters and the largest caimans.

After the navigation on the river, you will return to the lodge to enjoy a typical meal of the area.

Night walk and dinner

Before dinner, you will take a short night walk to appreciate the diversity of species such as insects, amphibians, reptiles and other nocturnal animals. You will return to the lodge to have dinner and rest for the next day.

DAY 3 Canopy Walk-Way - Zipline - Artisanal fishing - Kayak Madre de Dios River

Canopy Walk-Way

Today it's an early start! At 5:30 in the morning you will take a short walk along the Canopy Walk-Way. You will be 30 meters high and you will be able to appreciate nature from as high as possible. You will have a panoramic view of the Madre de Dios River and from the platform you will be able to observe different species of birds such as toucans, macaws, tanagers and oropendolas.

Zip line

After breakfast, the adventure begins! The guide will prepare a challenging activity over the trees at a height of more than 30 meters. Here the instructor guide will give you a talk on how to use the safety harness for the zip line. Feel the adrenaline rush as you glide through the middle of the trees! 😁 Afterwards you will return to the lodge for lunch.

Artisanal fishing 🎣

After lunch, you can practice artisanal fishing in the Madre de Dios River. With a little luck and patience you will be able to see some fish species such as catfish or palometas.

In the afternoon, it's time for another activity. Get ready to kayak across the Madre de Dios River and enjoy a beautiful sunset on the banks of the river. You will return to the lodge for dinner and rest after this day full of adventure and adrenaline.

The last day arrives. You will have breakfast at the lodge's dining room, pick up your luggage and return to the city. Transportation will take you to the airport or bus station where this 4 day Puerto Maldonado Jungle Tour will end.

What to bring to Puerto Maldonado 4-Day Jungle Tour

Puerto Maldonado is characterized by a humid and warm climate typical of the Peruvian Amazon. You will find temperatures between 20ºC (68ºF) and 40ºC (104ºF), dropping to 17ºC (62ºF) in the windy season (June and July). The rainy season is between December and March.

It will be important that you take with you light, comfortable, breathable and quick-drying clothing and footwear. Mosquito repellent, a hat or cap, sunglasses and a flashlight should not be missing in your suitcase.

The tour includes pick-up and drop-off at Puerto Maldonado airport. To get to the city of Puerto Maldonado the most common way is to take a commercial flight from Lima with a stopover in the city of Cusco, with a duration of 90 minutes. These flights have daily departures.

It is also possible to reach the city of Puerto Maldonado by road in a bus trip of about 10 hours approximately from the city of Cusco. If you arrive in Puerto Maldonado by land you can request a pick up directly in the city.

    After picking you up at the airport, we will stop by the Puerto Maldonado office before going to the lodge. Any luggage that you do not need for your stay in the jungle can be safely stored at the office for easy transport by boat to the lodge.

    The lodge included in the tour is a complex of 18 buildings built entirely using wood from the region. It has 30 rooms (15 of them in the form of a cabin/bungalow), looby/bar, dining room, kitchen, swimming pool and common areas such as terrace with hammocks, or outdoor smoking area among others. All the rooms are completely protected by mosquito nets to prevent the entry of mosquitoes and other insects. The lodge is located on the banks of the Madre de Dios River and has the traditional and rustic design of the houses of the region built by the skilled masters of the Palmareal Community.

  • What are the lodge rooms like?

    The lodge has a total of 30 rooms, including single, double, matrimonial and family rooms. 15 of them have been built as a cabin/bungalow with private terrace. Fifteen of them have been built in the form of a cabin/bungalow with private terrace, all rooms have private bathrooms and water in the showers supplied by the Madre de Dios River (previously chlorinated and crystallized). All of them also have access to electricity by generator for 4 hours a day (5:00pm to 9:00pm). Like the rest of the lodge, the rooms are completely protected by mosquito nets to prevent mosquitoes and other insects from entering the lodge.

  • Will I have electricity during the tour?

    The lodge where you will be staying has an electric generator (fully encapsulated) used for short periods of approximately 4 hours (5:00pm to 9:00pm). Howlanders recommends that you take advantage of this time to charge your electronic devices. From 9:00 p.m. the lodge is illuminated by the dim and romantic light of kerosene lamps providing a magical atmosphere to the place. We also recommend that you don't forget to bring a flashlight in your suitcase.

  • Will I be covered during the tour?

    From the lodge facilities you will have access to the telephone network of your phone. The lodge does not have a public telephone or internet connection. Take advantage of these days to disconnect.

  • How is the meal included in the tour?

    The tour includes full board of 3 meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) served in the lodge dining room. The lodge serves buffet meals when more than 15 travelers stay at the lodge, and table service when the number is less than 15. Fresh water, coffee or tea, and soft drinks are offered during meals. Meals consist of salads, main courses and desserts combining regional, Peruvian and international cuisine. The lodge also has a bar service.

  • Is there a vegetarian menu option?

    Yes, it is possible to adapt the food to the needs of each traveler. We recommend that you inform us in advance of any dietary restrictions, allergies or special diets in order to program the supplies before your arrival at the Lodge.
