DAY 1 — Puerto Maldonado – Ecolodge

Pick-up in Puerto Maldonado
Your experience begins with pick-up from the airport, bus station, or your accommodation in Puerto Maldonado, as previously arranged. Together with your local guide, you’ll travel by road to Puerto Capitanía, where you’ll board the boat for your river transfer to the ecolodge.
You’ll then navigate along the Madre de Dios River, covering approximately 20 km (about a 10-minute ride). Along the way, you’ll start to immerse yourself in the Amazon landscape before arriving at the ecolodge, located on the riverbanks within the buffer zone of the Tambopata National Reserve.
Arrival at the ecolodge and lunch
Upon arrival, you’ll be welcomed with a refreshing drink. After check-in, you’ll receive a short introduction to the lodge and activity schedule, followed by lunch surrounded by the sounds of the rainforest.

Visit to the Amazon Organic Farm
In the afternoon, you’ll visit the lodge’s agroforestry farm to learn how sustainable agriculture is practiced in the middle of the rainforest and how crops naturally coexist with the Amazon ecosystem.
You’ll discover the basics of Amazon agroforestry while seeing a wide variety of tropical crops, including banana, papaya, cacao, mango, pineapple, sugar cane, citrus fruits, avocado, cocona, Amazon chili, and cassava. Depending on the season, you may also get to taste some fresh local products.

After sunset, you’ll head out on a night boat excursion along the Madre de Dios River. During this 1.5-hour activity, you may spot caimans along the riverbanks and other nocturnal wildlife, always accompanied by your guide.
Dinner and overnight stay
After the excursion, you’ll return to the ecolodge for dinner and a well-deserved rest.

DAY 2

Tambopata National Reserve and Lake Sandoval
The day starts early with a boat trip to the Tambopata National Reserve. After disembarking, you’ll take a guided hike of approximately 3 km (1.9 miles) through rainforest trails until reaching Lake Sandoval. Breakfast will be served during the excursion, surrounded by nature.
Once at the lake, you’ll explore the area by paddle canoe, quietly navigating the water in search of wildlife such as giant river otters, caimans, monkeys, turtles, and a wide variety of bird species. Lake Sandoval is considered one of the most spectacular locations in the Peruvian Amazon.
Return to the ecolodge and lunch
After the visit, you’ll return to the ecolodge for lunch and some time to rest before the afternoon activities.

Kayaking on the Madre de Dios River
In the afternoon, you’ll kayak along the Madre de Dios River, gently floating with the current while observing the rainforest from the water. After about two hours, you’ll return to the ecolodge by boat.
Night jungle walk
At dusk, you’ll head out on a guided night walk along trails near the ecolodge. Using flashlights, you’ll discover nocturnal wildlife and learn how to identify animal sounds, tracks, and movements in the rainforest.

La Cachuela Parrot Clay Lick
The day begins very early to experience one of the most memorable moments of the trip. Around 5:00 AM, you’ll travel by boat upstream for about 30 minutes to reach the Cachuela Clay Lick, when bird activity is at its peak.
From the boat, you may observe several species of parrots and parakeets, including yellow-fronted parakeets, mealy parrots, and occasionally blue-headed macaws and other smaller macaws. You’ll also enjoy a beautiful Amazon sunrise while observing the clay lick.
Breakfast at the ecolodge
After the activity, you’ll return to the ecolodge for breakfast before continuing with the day’s excursions.

Shihuahuaco Trail hike
After breakfast, you’ll take a guided hike along the Shihuahuaco Trail, a 2 km (1.2 miles) trail located in the buffer zone of the Tambopata National Reserve.
During the hike, you’ll cross different rainforest habitats ideal for wildlife spotting and plant observation. You’ll also see the impressive shihuahuaco tree, one of the most iconic species in the Amazon. This activity is perfect for nature photography and learning about the ecosystem.
Return to the ecolodge and lunch
After the hike, you’ll return to the ecolodge for lunch and some time to rest before the afternoon activity.

Yacumama Lagoon and piranha fishing
In the afternoon, you’ll visit Yacumama Lagoon, one of the most important wetlands in the region. This area is part of a conservation project managed by the local Santa Teresa community, which promotes ecotourism to help protect the environment.
Here, you’ll experience traditional piranha fishing while exploring this unique ecosystem, home to many species of birds, parrots, and macaws.

DAY 4 — Ecolodge – Puerto Maldonado
