Questions & Answers

  • When is the best time to climb Mount Toubkal in two days?

The Mount Toubkal 2 Day Trek can be done year-round, although the best time—and the period we strongly recommend—is from mid-April to mid-November, when weather conditions are generally more stable and ideal for trekking.

During the winter months, snow, ice, and lower temperatures are common, and the route may require additional equipment and prior mountain experience.

  • Is the 2-day climb up Mount Toubkal a private tour?

Yes. This tour, as well as all trekking experiences in the Moroccan Atlas Mountains, is operated as a private experience, meaning you will hike exclusively with your group and a dedicated local guide.

For safety and service quality, the maximum ratio is 1 guide per 12 travelers, ensuring proper attention throughout the trek.

  • Where does the Mount Toubkal climb begin?

The trek begins in Imlil, a mountain village located in the High Atlas at an altitude of approximately 5,709 feet (1,740 m). The tour includes private transportation from Marrakech to Imlil.

  • How much do you walk each day?

On the first day of the Mount Toubkal 2 Day Trek, you will hike for approximately 5 to 6 hours until reaching the mountain refuge.

The second day is more demanding and is the longest day of the trek. You will hike for a total of 10 to 12 hours, including the ascent to the summit, the descent back to the refuge, and the final descent to Imlil.

If you prefer a more relaxed and evenly paced experience, we recommend the 3-day Mount Toubkal trek, where the ascent is split into two separate days: Day 2 is dedicated to reaching the summit and returning to the refuge, and Day 3 is the descent to Imlil, making the experience less physically demanding.

  • What is the difference between the 2-day and 3-day Mount Toubkal ascent?

The 2-day Mount Toubkal ascent is the shortest and most intense option. The climb is completed quickly, with the first day reaching the mountain refuge and the summit attempt the following day. It is a demanding experience with limited time for acclimatization.

The 3-day Mount Toubkal ascent follows the same goal—reaching the summit of Jbel Toubkal (4,167 m)—but spreads the effort over more stages. This allows for a more gradual pace, better altitude acclimatization, and a more comfortable trekking experience.

In short, both options lead to the summit, but the 2-day trek is faster and more intense, while the 3-day option is more balanced and progressive.

  • How is the Mount Toubkal trek (2 or 3 days) different from the 6-day circular trek?

The main difference is the focus of the trip and the type of experience each option offers.

The 2-day Toubkal Ascent and the 3-day Toubkal Ascent are designed to reach the summit of Jbel Toubkal (13,671 ft / 4,167 m), the highest peak in North Africa. Both itineraries focus on the ascent, passing through Imlil and the mountain refuge, where you spend the night before attempting the summit. The 2-day version is shorter and more intense, while the 3-day version spreads out the effort, allowing for a more gradual adaptation to altitude.

In contrast, the 6-day Toubkal Circuit does not include the ascent to the summit of Toubkal. It is a much more scenic and cultural circular route, designed to explore the surroundings of the massif, crossing different valleys, mountain passes, and Berber villages in the High Atlas. During the trek, the experience focuses on discovering the mountains, their landscapes, and local life, rather than reaching a summit.

In short, the 2-day or 3-day Toubkal Ascent is focused on reaching the summit of Toubkal, while the 6-day Toubkal Circuit is a more immersive circular trek, ideal for those who want to explore the region in depth, enjoy its landscapes, and discover Berber villages without climbing to the peak.

  • What is the highest elevation reached during the 2-day ascent of Mount Toubkal?

The highest point reached is the summit of Mount Toubkal, at 13,671 feet (4,167 m) above sea level.

  • Is prior mountaineering experience required?

No technical mountaineering experience is required. However, you should be in good physical condition and have experience with long-distance hiking in mountainous terrain.

  • Is climbing Mount Toubkal difficult?

Yes, this is a challenging trek. While no technical climbing skills are needed, the route includes steep ascents, long hiking days, and high altitude, making it suitable for active travelers with good fitness levels.

  • Where do we stay overnight during the tour?

You will spend the night in the Toubkal Mountain Refuge, located at over 10,500 feet (3,200 m) in the High Atlas Mountains. Although the experience is private, the refuge is shared with other trekkers from around the world.

  • What is the Toubkal Mountain Refuge like?

The Toubkal Mountain Refuge is a basic high-altitude lodge located in the heart of the High Atlas Mountains. It is the main overnight stop during the ascent of Mount Toubkal.

Accommodation is simple and shared, with bunk-bed dormitories, shared bathrooms, and common areas to rest and warm up. The rooms have a capacity of between 12 and 27 people. Facilities are limited due to the remote location and altitude, particularly regarding hot water and electricity.

The atmosphere is international and welcoming, as it brings together hikers from all over the world attempting the summit of Mount Toubkal.

  • Is a sleeping bag included?

No. A sleeping bag is not included, so you must bring your own.

  • How does luggage transport work during the trek?

During the Mount Toubkal 2 Day Trek, a mule will carry your main luggage throughout the route, allowing you to hike more comfortably without carrying heavy weight.

Your main bag will be transported to the mountain refuge, where you will have access to it overnight.

You will still need to carry a small daypack with essentials such as water, warm clothing, snacks, sunscreen, and personal items needed during each day of hiking.

  • What meals are included?

The tour includes the meals specified in the itinerary: lunch and dinner on Day 1, and breakfast and lunch on Day 2.

  • Does the tour end in Marrakech?

Yes. After completing the hike in Imlil, you will take a private transfer back to Marrakech, where the Mount Toubkal 2 Day Trek ends.
