Briefing

The 6-Day Toubkal Circuit is a private trekking route through Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains, designed to explore the Toubkal massif more thoroughly than a direct ascent. Along the way, you’ll traverse Berber valleys, high-altitude mountain passes, traditional villages, and remote Atlas landscapes, including such special sites as Lake Ifni and the area around the Toubkal refuge.

Unlike the classic 2- or 3-day ascent of Toubkal, this itinerary does not focus on reaching the summit, but rather on completing a circular trek around the massif, offering a deeper, more varied, and culturally enriching experience. This is a challenging trek, featuring several long days of hiking and mountain passes above 3,000 meters, so good physical fitness and prior experience on mountain trails are recommended.

The tour is a private trip with a local guide, a cook, mules to carry your luggage, and accommodations in camps, mountain huts, or simple mountain lodgings depending on the stage. If you’re looking for a different kind of experience, discover all theguided routes in the Moroccan Atlas Mountains here.

You can also round out your adventure in Morocco with one of our otherdesert excursions from Marrakech.

Important information

  • HIGH DIFFICULTY: The Toubkal circuit is also a demanding trek due to the length of the route, the cumulative elevation gain, the altitude, and the consecutive days of hiking. You must be in good physical condition and accustomed to hiking in the mountains for several hours and days.
  • ALTITUDE: The route crosses mountain passes above 3,000 meters, such as Tizi Likemt, Tizi n’Ououraine, and Tizi n’Ouanoums. Altitude can affect your pace, so it’s important to walk at a leisurely pace, stay properly hydrated, and always follow the guide’s instructions.
  • PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE: Technical mountaineering experience is not required, but it is recommended that you have previously completed long-distance trekking routes, preferably lasting several days.
  • ACCOMMODATIONS: Overnight stays are in camps, mountain huts, or simple mountain lodgings, as detailed in the itinerary, depending on the stage of the trek. A sleeping bag is not included, so you’ll need to bring your own.
  • LUGGAGE: During the trek, mules will be available to carry your main luggage. We recommend bringing a small daypack with water, warm clothing, sunscreen, snacks, and any personal items you may need during the hike.
  • ITINERARY: The route may be modified for safety reasons, due to weather conditions, snow, terrain conditions, or the group’s condition. The guide will adjust the route whenever necessary to ensure safety and the best possible experience.

Night in a Berber Village

In Amsouzert, you’ll spend the night in simple mountain lodging. This will be an ideal stop to rest, recharge, and enjoy a more authentic local atmosphere before continuing on to Lake Ifni.

Duration: 4 hours of hiking

Distance: 6 km

The goal for the day is to reach Lake Ifni, the only natural lake in this part of the Toubkal Massif. Surrounded by rugged mountains and massive rock formations, it is one of the most unique landscapes on the entire circuit.

Afternoon of relaxation by the lake

We usually arrive at the lake around noon, so you’ll have the afternoon to rest and enjoy the surroundings. You’ll spend the night camping by Lake Ifni, at one of the most remote and spectacular spots on the route.

Departure from Amsouzert

After breakfast, you’ll leave Amsouzert behind to continue the circuit toward Lake Ifni. Today’s hike is shorter than the previous ones, allowing you to walk at a more leisurely pace and enjoy the scenery.

Route Through Berber Villages

During the hike, you’ll pass through small mountain villages located west of Amsouzert. This part of the route showcases a more rural and traditional side of the High Atlas, with isolated villages, local trails, and increasingly arid and rocky landscapes.

Day 5: Lake Ifni – Tizi n’Ouanoums – Toubkal Mountain Hut

Difficulty: high

Elevation gain: 1 ,228 m

Maximum elevation: 3 ,664 m

Duration: 6–7 hours of hiking

Distance: 21 km

Accommodation: Toubkal refuge or campsite near the refuge

Meals included: breakfast, lunch, and dinner

Highlights: Tizi n’Ouanoums Pass and ascent to the Toubkal Refuge

Start of the most challenging stage

Day five is one of the toughest days on the Toubkal circuit. After several days of trekking, your body will be more acclimated, but the stage remains challenging due to the altitude, elevation gain, and terrain.

Ascent to Tizi n’Ouanoums

The route begins with a steep climb up a rocky slope leading to the Tizi n’Ouanoums pass, located at 3,664 meters. The ascent is slow and demanding, especially due to the loose rock and the continuous incline.

Crossing the Pass

When you reach Tizi n’Ouanoums, you’ll arrive at one of the highest points on the circuit. This narrow mountain pass is nestled between towering rock faces and offers one of the most breathtaking panoramic views of the entire trek.

Descent to the Toubkal Refuge

From the pass, you’ll begin a long, zigzagging descent toward the Toubkal refuge area. Upon arrival, you’ll spend the night in a mountain refuge or at a campsite in the surrounding area, depending on the itinerary and current conditions.

Day 6: Toubkal Refuge - Sidi Chamharouch - Imlil - Marrakech

Difficulty: moderate

Maximum elevation: approximately3 ,207 m

Duration: 4–5 hours of hiking

Distance: 12 km

Meals included: breakfast and lunch

Highlights: Imlil Valley and Sidi Chamharouch

Descent through the Mizane Valley

After breakfast, you’ll begin the final stage of the Toubkal circuit. The route descends from the refuge area, following the Mizane Valley—one of the busiest trails in the High Atlas.

Passing Through Sidi Chamharouch

During the descent, you’ll pass through Sidi Chamharouch, a common stopping point on trekking routes in the area. From here, you’ll continue walking along mountain trails, through small villages, and through landscapes that grow increasingly green as you lose elevation.

Arrival in Imlil

The hike ends in Imlil, the same village where the trek began on the first day. Here you can rest and enjoy the last included meal before saying goodbye to the local team.

Return to Marrakech

After finishing the trek, you’ll take private transportation back to Marrakech. The trip takes about an hour and a half, and the tour will end upon arrival at your accommodation or the designated meeting point in the city.

What to bring to 6-Day Toubkal Circuit + Berber Villages tour

To complete the Toubkal circuit in 6 days, it’s important to be well-equipped, since you’ll be hiking for several consecutive days through mountainous terrain, crossing passes above 3,000 meters, and sleeping in camps, mountain huts, or simple mountain lodgings.

Questions & Answers

  • Does the Toubkal circuit include the ascent to the summit of Jbel Toubkal?

No. This tour is designed as a circular route around the Toubkal massif and does not include an ascent to the summit of Jbel Toubkal.

If your main goal is to reach the summit, we recommend choosing the 2-Day Toubkal Ascent or the 3-Day Toubkal Ascent. The 6-Day Toubkal Circuit is designed for those seeking a more comprehensive trekking experience, taking in valleys, mountain passes, Berber villages, and the more remote areas of the High Atlas.

If you’d like a customized tour of 6 or more days that does include the ascent to the summit of Mount Toubkal, please contact us.

  • What is the difference between the 2- or 3-day ascent of Toubkal and the 6-day Toubkal Circuit?

The main difference is the approach to the hike.

The 2- or 3-day ascent of Toubkal focuses on reaching the summit of Jbel Toubkal by following a more direct route from Imlil to the mountain hut and the summit.

The 6-day Toubkal Circuit, on the other hand, is a longer and more varied circular route that circles the Toubkal massif. During the trek, you’ll pass through various valleys, mountain passes, Berber villages, and remote landscapes of the High Atlas, including Lake Ifni and the area around the Toubkal mountain hut.

In short, the ascent focuses on the summit, while the circuit prioritizes in-depth exploration of the Toubkal massif and cultural experiences in the Berber villages.

  • How difficult is the Toubkal trail?

The Toubkal circuit is also quite challenging. It is not a technical route, but it does require good physical fitness and prior experience with trekking or mountain trails.

For several days, you’ll hike between 4 and 7 hours a day, cross mountain passes at altitudes above 3,000 meters, and traverse rocky terrain with significant elevation changes. The altitude and the length of the route make it a challenging hike.

  • Do I need previous mountaineering experience?

You don't need technical mountaineering experience, but it is recommended that you have completed multi-day trekking routes or long mountain hikes.

This tour is designed for active travelers who are used to walking for several hours and are prepared to sleep in simple accommodations or mountain camps.

  • Where do you stay overnight during the tour?

During the trek, you’ll spend the nights in a combination of campsites, mountain huts, and simple lodgings in mountain villages.

Some nights are spent in tents, such as in the Azib Likemt area or at Lake Ifni, and others in basic accommodations or mountain huts, depending on the stage of the itinerary. The tour includes a tent and sleeping pad, but remember that you’ll need to bring your own sleeping bag for both nights spent camping and nights spent in mountain huts.

  • Is the tour private?

Yes. The Toubkal trek is a private tour, so you'll be hiking the route exclusively with your group and a dedicated local guide.

This allows us to better adapt the pace of the hike and enjoy a more personalized experience in the mountains.

  • Who carries the luggage during the trek?

Your main luggage will be carried by mules along the route. You’ll only need to carry a small backpack with the essentials for each day: water, warm clothes, sunscreen, a camera, documents, and personal items.

  • Do I need to bring a sleeping bag?

Yes. A sleeping bag is not included, so you'll need to bring your own.

We recommend using a sleeping bag suitable for the mountains, as temperatures can drop at night, especially at higher altitudes.

  • When is the best time to hike the Toubkal Circuit?

The best time to hike the Toubkal circuit is usually from spring to fall, especially between June and September, when hiking conditions tend to be most favorable.

In winter and early spring, there may be snow or ice on the mountain passes, so the itinerary may require specific equipment or adjustments for safety reasons.

  • What meals are included?

Meals during the trek are included. The local team is responsible for preparing meals along the route using the necessary cooking equipment.

Beverages not listed, bottled water, and personal expenses are not included.

  • Where does the tour end?

The tour ends in Marrakech. On the last day, you'll hike down to Imlil, and from there, you'll take a private transfer back to Marrakech.
