Briefing

The Perito Moreno Glacier Tour Safari Azul is the ideal option for those who want to get to know the Perito Moreno Glacier from up close. You can choose the option with transfers from El Calafate or get to the port in your own vehicle. During 20 minutes you will sail along the Brazo Rico of Lake Argentino, walk for 30 minutes through the Patagonian forest until you reach the ice of the glacier itself (you do not walk on the ice) where you will have some free time to enjoy this moment and return walking along the same path. The return boat tour is done in front of the south wall of the Perito Moreno Glacier. In addition, the option with transfers includes a visit to the footbridges of Perito Moreno before returning to El Calafate.

⏰ DEPARTURE: The tour has several daily departures at different times. The exact departure time of your tour will be confirmed by whatsapp the day before, starting at 6:00 P.M.

Remember that Mastercard is not accepted to purchase the entrance ticket to Los Glaciares National Park. You can pay with VISA card or in cash in Argentine pesos when you arrive at the park. Do not forget your ID, passport or identity card.

Perito Moreno Glacier Tour Safari Azul

Pick up in El Calafate

If you have selected the pick-up option, you will be picked up at your accommodation in El Calafate at the assigned time. Once the whole group is together, you will head to Los Glaciares National Park. 

Meeting and boarding Puerto Bajo Las Sombras

If you have selected the option without pick-up, you will have to make your own way to Puerto Debajo de Las Sombras, inside Los Glaciares National Park.

Once here, you will take a boat to cross Lago Rico. After sailing for about 20 minutes, you will disembark on the opposite shore of the glacier.

The hike begins, always with a view of the south face of the glacier. Be careful! There may be some ice detachment. Take out your camera and photograph that image of intense and varied blues and whites and the shapes of the glacier. 

Touching the glacier ice

When you arrive next to the glacier wall, you will have free time to enjoy the moment and take some pictures. Afterwards, you return to the boat by the same route.

🚶‍♀️ The hike lasts an hour and a half through a natural terrain of sand and stones with some slopes and stairs.

Perito Moreno Footbridges

If you have booked the option without pick-up in El Calafate, the tour ends when you return to the port. However, we recommend that you take advantage of the fact that you are only 7km away from the Perito Moreno footbridges to visit them.

If you have selected the option with pick up, once at the port, you will take the bus to the Perito Moreno footbridges. Take advantage of these two hours to have lunch and enjoy the incredible panoramic view of the Perito Moreno Glacier.

Return to El Calafate

After having spent the day seeing the glacier, you will take the bus back to El Calafate. The Perito Moreno Glacier Blue Safari tour will end around 5:00 p.m., depending on the assigned time.

Where does the tour Boat tour and hike to the Perito Moreno Glacier - Safari Azul start

The city of El Calafate is located 3,000 km from Buenos Aires, and 325 km from the city of Río Gallegos, capital of the province of Santa Cruz. The airport has direct daily connections with Buenos Aires, Ushuaia, Bariloche, Trelew, Cordoba and Rosario. Several airlines operate this route, being Aerolineas Argentinas the most frequent one. From Howlanders we also recommend you to check LADE airline. 

If you want to arrive by land you can do it by bus. The trip between Buenos Aires and El Calafate takes about 36 hours. From Río Gallegos, the trip takes 4 hours. If you come from Puerto Natales we recommend you to take a bus that arrives to El Calafate in about five hours or hire a private service with us. Finally, if you are traveling from Ushuaia, please check the waiting times due to the crossing of the Strait of Magellan or stopover in Rio Gallegos.

  • Does the tour include food?

    No, the activity does not include food, so you must bring your own food and a water bottle. There is no possibility to buy food anywhere.

  • Will I be able to walk on the Perito Moreno Glacier?

    It is not possible to do the ice walk with this tour. For this, we recommend you to take the Mini Ice Trekking Perito Moreno Glacier.

  • How difficult is the tour?

    The difficulty of the tour is low, but the terrain presents rocks, gentle slopes and stairs.

  • Does the tour has departures all year round?

    No, the season runs from July 15 to May 31. The month of June and the first half of July is not operational.
