Hiking on the ice of Perito Moreno
The long version of the classic minitrekking
Briefing
This walk on the ice of the Perito Moreno, also called "Minitrekking 2" differs from the classic Minitrekking Perito Moreno by having a more demanding itinerary in which you walk for 3,1 miles (5 km) on the ice of the glacier.
When booking the tour you can include pick up in El Calafate or go directly to Puerto Bajo las Sombras. You navigate in front of the south wall of the Perito Moreno until you reach the coast, from where you start walking along the lateral moraine of the glacier until you reach the place to put on your crampons. The real walk on the ice begins, for more than two hours you walk with the crampons until you return to the starting point. Finally, you visit a small waterfall and take the boat back to the port. The option with pick-up also offers a one-hour visit to the Perito Moreno footbridges before returning to El Calafate.

If you have selected the option with pick-up, at the time indicated the day before, you will be picked up at your accommodation or the pick-up point indicated and start the one-hour trip to Puerto Bajo las Sombra, in Los Glaciares National Park.
If you have selected the option without transfers, you will go directly to the port. Once the group has gathered, the guides will assist you with the purchase of the tickets and then take the boat.
Navigation and walk next to the glacier
During 10 minutes you will sail along the Rico Lake, in front of the south wall of the Perito Moreno. Upon arrival, the mountain guides will be waiting for the group to begin the hike along the shore of the lake, which goes into the glacier's moraine. The moraine is a rocky terrain next to the glacier itself, so from this point onwards you will be walking along the ice. Finally, you reach the starting point of the walk on the ice, where there are some small facilities where you will be assisted to put on the crampons.
Hiking on the ice of Perito Moreno
The most awaited moment has arrived!
As we have mentioned, this hike is longer and more demanding than the famous minitrekking, although not as long as the Big Ice. During 3 miles (5 km) you walk on the ice of the glacier and see the formations that cannot be seen from the walkways: deep crevasses, water sinkholes, turquoise lagoons and even seracs. This route over the ice does not follow a marked itinerary, as the glacier is alive and changing, so the guide will decide the best route for the group each day. Finally, after the 3 milees (5 km), we return to the starting point to return the crampons and continue the adventure.
Waterfall and return navigation
We start our way back to the beach where we disembark. During the route, we visit a waterfall and continue until we reach the beach, known as Puma Bay, where the boat will be waiting to take us back to the port. It is at this point where the activity ends for travelers who book the option without transfers, to whom we recommend that they take advantage of the fact that they are only 4,3 miles (7 km) away and visit the walkways of the Perito Moreno as the rest of the group does.
Visit to the footbridges and return to El Calafate.
Travelers who include the option with transfers continue the tour with a one hour visit to the famous walkways of the Perito Moreno. Upon arrival, the guide will explain the different routes and for one hour you will be able to explore it on your own. After that time, you will go to the meeting point to take the transport to El Calafate.
