Explore the great Viedma Glacier with the Full Day Chaltén: Sailing Lake Viedma from El Calafate, the most complete option to discover it, as it includes the transfer from El Calafate, a stop at the Historic Parador La Leona and a visit to El Chaltén at the end of the day.

You will start with the pick-up at your accommodation to take the mythical Route 40, where you will make a stop in La Leona before continuing to Puerto Bahía Túnel. From there you will embark to sail on Lake Viedma with views of the Huemul Massif. The boat goes into the bay until you reach Bahía Cabo de Hornos, where you will disembark for a short guided trek to the panoramic viewpoint overlooking Bahía de los Témpanos. Afterwards, you will embark again to continue the boat tour and approach the front of the Viedma Glacier, from where you will be able to see its ice wall up close.

At the end, you will sail back to the port and head for El Chaltén, where you will have time to get to know this mountain village before returning to El Calafate with drop-off at your accommodation.

Full-Day Viedma Glacier Boat Tour from El Calafate

Departure from El Calafate 📍.

You will start the tour from El Calafate, where you will be picked up at 07:00 at the door of your accommodation (it is important to be ready at least 15 minutes before). You will travel the mythical Patagonian route with a stop in La Leona, a historic place ideal to enjoy the scenery. The trip to Bahía Túnel takes about 3 hours and a quarter, and when you arrive at the port you will board the catamaran that sails on Lake Viedma.

Once aboard the boat, you will skirt the shore of Lake Viedma and you will be able to contemplate the imposing silhouette of the Huemul Massif.

Trekking in Cabo de Hornos Bay 🏔️

After about 40 minutes of sailing you will arrive at Cabo de Hornos Bay, where you will get off the boat to begin a guided hike of low difficulty. The guide will be marking the pace of the group and will be waiting for you in case you need anything along the way.

The trail ends at a viewpoint on the Cabo de Hornos Peninsula, from where you will be able to see the Bahía de los Témpanos. There you will have a short break to have a snack included in the tour before returning to the boat to continue the excursion.

Viedma Glacier

You will get back on the ship for the key part of the tour: approaching the Viedma Glacier. From the deck you will have a close look at its large ice front, while the guide explains its origin, how it was formed and some facts about this glacier, the largest in Argentina within the Los Glaciares National Park.

Disembark at Puerto Bahía Tunel - Visit to El Chaltén and return to El Calafate.

Finally, the boat tour will start the return to the port where you will disembark at 2:30 pm. We will return to the town of El Chaltén for a self-guided tour until 5:00 pm where you will start the return to El Calafate to arrive at your accommodation at approximately 8:00 pm.

    No, although it is a low difficulty trekking and lasts approximately half an hour, you can also wait at the port where there is a small cafeteria while the rest of the group makes the tour.
