Briefing

The Private 4x4 Tour of Salar de Uyuni will take you on an exciting 3-day journey through the stunning Salar de Uyuni. This tour follows the classic tour itinerary, but unlike group tours, this private tour is conducted with a personal driver in a private car. This lends more flexibility to the tour; adjustable schedules, longer stops, and a far more comfortable ride with fewer people.

In general, this tour is more customizable: offering a bilingual guide (English-Spanish) as an add-on, as well as a stay in heated hotels. Both options are sure to optimize your enjoyment. If you love photography, are traveling as a couple or with family, or just want to explore the world’s largest salt flat with some extra comfort, this tour is perfect for you.

When booking, you can choose to end the tour in Uyuni or cross over to Chile and finish up in San Pedro de Atacama by adding a transfer. As previously noted, you have the option to stay in heated hotels or hostels, always with private rooms and bathrooms. Get ready to cover a total of 560 mi (900 km) in a private 4x4 vehicle, accompanied by a driver to ensure all is safe and top-notch!

Train Cemetery

Shortly after beginning the tour, you’ll stop at the Train Cemetery, where old locomotives have been abandoned, creating a unique landscape surrounded by emptiness and desert. Ultimately, the cemetery’s topography reflects the economic splendor Uyuni once experienced.

Colchani and Salt Museum

Colchani: the gateway to the Uyuni Salt Flats. It’s also a small town on the itinerary that features the Salt Museum and the Refinery where salt is processed. Before heading off, you’ll also visit the local artisan shops selling goods made with alpaca wool and salt.

Incahuasi 🌵

Amidst the vast sea of salt is a small hill, an island if you will, containing a unique ecosystem of giant cacti known as "cardones". Thanks to the island’s elevation, it provides unparalleled views of the Salt Flat, the perfect spot for a pensive thought or more photos. You’ll have time to get to know the island as well; walk its trails and eat lunch at the foot of the island if the weather permits.

Continue the morning and visit the Sol de la Mañana Geyser Field with its unique formations. The fumaroles are especially striking during the early hours of the morning; a result of the temperature difference.

Polques Hot Springs and Salvador Dali Desert

The last visit on your itinerary is probably the one you’ll enjoy the most: the hot springs of Polques, where you can bathe in its natural hot springs while gazing at the unforgettable landscape.

💬Howlanders tip: *The contrasting temperature of the cold air vs. the hot water is especially high in the winter months (June-September) so be prepared to dry off quickly when getting out and snack on something sweet before bathing to prevent your blood pressure from dropping.

After your swim, head to the Salvador Dali desert and visit the Green and White Lagoons. From these lagoons, you’ll have incredible views of the Licancabur Volcano. Don’t forget to take a few snapshots for the memories.

Questions & Answers

  • When can we see the mirror effect?

The mirror effect occurs during the rainy season (January, February, and March). After rainfall, the water creates a beautiful mirror, also known as reflections.

  • Does the driver speak English and will he/she explain and help us take pictures?

Drivers do not usually speak English nor do they conduct the tour like a guide but they will do their best to help you understand the landscape and the surrounding areas. Drivers for this tour are also great at snapping pictures.

  • Can I modify the itinerary?

Yes, because this is a private tour you can request to modify the itinerary as long as it does not involve major changes, for example, you can request to avoid some stops to take more time in others.

  • How are the vehicles used for the tour?

Tours to the Uyuni Salt Flat are conducted in 7-seater 4x4 vehicles, mostly Toyota Land Cruisers. Six seats are occupied by travelers and the last one is for your driver.

  • How warm/cold will the tour be ?

From April to September temperatures are very low. The days are typically around 50ºF (10ºC) while at night it drops to 23ºF (-5ºC). Of all the months, June, July, and August are especially cold. From October to March, temperatures are warmer, rising to 68ºF (20ºC) during the day and dropping to 41ºF (5ºC) at night.

  • Is the route modified during the rainy season?

The tour may require some modifications due to weather events, most likely during the season from January to March, with some areas experiencing flooding resulting in inaccessibility. Usually, Incahuasi is not available, therefore the itinerary will be amended for an alternate site.

  • How are the accommodations during the tour?

There are two options for accommodation during the tour: hotels or hostels.

The hostels are basic and the first night is in a salt hostel. Unlike many Uyuni tours, this salt hostel is smaller and has better common areas and more bathrooms (subject to availability). On the second night, accommodations are in a small hostel near the Colorada Lagoon. None of the accommodations have heating in the rooms and winter nights are cold, therefore, you can request a sleeping bag by leaving a note in the reservation and paying for it at the destination. In general, throughout the area, the supply of accommodations is very limited and the lodgings are managed by the locals. They are very humble accommodations that lack typical luxuries.

If you prefer a more comfortable and higher quality accommodation, you can book at one of the 3-star hotels in the area (there are no intermediate quality rooms).
