Train Cemetery After meeting and picking up the rest of our fellow travelers at their hotels, we will leave in our 7-seater 4x4 to our first stop: the train cemetery, a landscape formed by the remains of what a long time ago was a symbol of Bolivians development into a modern nation. Remember that in the 4x4 you will travel a maximum of 4 passengers plus the driver.

Colchani Salt Refinery We will continue our trip through the salar and visit the Colchani salt refinery, here we will learn about the extraction and refinery process of the salt. Just a few meters away we will see the large salt heaps and the salt eyes and understand how the extraction process works.

Incahuasi Island We will go deeper into the salar and we will make our first long stop at the Incahuasi Island (the entrance fee is 30 bolivian pesos). This island is one of the few elevated places in the whole salt flats and hosts a unique environment. We will walk through its trails and see the different species of cactus that inhabit it. As we reach the highest point, we are rewarded with a fascinating panorama view of the wide desert. The perfect spot for some memorable photos...

Lunch at Uyuni Salt Flats After the visit of Incahuasi we will go further into the desert to have lunch together in the middle of the salar. The tour guide will prepare the table and chairs and will cook for us so we can enjoy the meal with one of the best possible views.

Salt Hotel - DAKAR Statue After lunch, we will continue our journey to continue touring the Salar de Uyuni in one day. We make a stop at the first Salt Hotel that was built in the Salar: the Playa Blanca Hotel. And we will take pictures in front of the famous DAKAR statue.

What to bring to Uyuni Salt Flats

When preparing your luggage, remember that the rainy season in the Salt Flats is between December and March. Winter, between May and August, is especially cold, so we recommend you to bring:
  • Passport
  • Warm clothing
  • Raincoat (between December and March)
  • Sunglasses
  • Comfortable shoes (if possible hiking boots)
  • Sunscreen and lip balm
  • Personal hygiene articles and medication
  • Cash for possible additional expenses
  • Camera (the Uyuni Sal Flats are an opportunity for photography lovers)
  • Medication against altitude sickness (if you deem them necessary)

Where does the tour Uyuni Salt Flats start

If you are planning to arrive from La Paz you can fly to Uyuni. This route is operated by the airlines Amaszonas and Boa. If you plan to travel to Uyuni by land you should take a bus. We recommend taking the night bus which departs from La Paz at 8:00 p.m. with the company TransOmar. This providers offers more comfortable seats and even has a bed option that will allow you to sleep on the way. The bus will be arriving in Uyuni at 6:00 a.m. (approximate cost $21.00 USD one way). Upon arrival you will have time for breakfast before starting the tour. *If you arrive in Uyuni on the same day as the tour starts, we offer you a free transfer from the bus station or airport to Uyuni. If you arrive in Uyuni before the day the tour starts, your pickup point will be your accommodation in Uyuni.

The Mirror Effect occurs during the rainy season, so it can be seen during the months of January, February and March.

How is the weather? Is it very cold?
You need to keep in mind that this tour is in a high altitude and isolated area, so during winter the weather is very cold. These are the seasons during the year. - From October to March temperatures are warm, so days are around 20ºC (68ºF) and nights are less than 5ºC (41 ºF). - From April to September temperatures are cold, so days are around 10ºC (50ºF) and nights are around -5ºC( 23ºF) It is highly recommended to wear winter clothes during June, July and August months due to these months are coldest.
