The Reindeer Tour Tromso + Sami Camp gives you the chance to discover firsthand the story of these endearing animals and the traditional culture of the Sami people.

We’ll be picked up by a bus at the meeting point and head north of Tromso to visit a reindeer farm run by a local Sami family. The Sami culture is fascinating and one of the most enduring in Europe. You’ll learn about their way of life, such as how they make traditional clothing and how they domesticate reindeer. It’s a full cultural immersion!

An expert guide will accompany us, not only introducing you to the reindeer but also explaining their importance in Norwegian culture. You’ll even get the chance to feed and play with them! This tour is much more respectful of the animals, as it does not include a sleigh ride. It’s designed for the whole family to enjoy meaningful interaction with the reindeer, especially kids who love spending time petting and feeding them.

The tour also includes local snacks and hot drinks like chocolate and tea.

Pickup at the meeting point and transfer to the reindeer farm

We’ll meet at the scheduled time at the meeting point and board our comfortable, heated bus to head north of Tromso where the reindeer farm is located.

This journey takes about 30 minutes, and you’ll enjoy the view of the snowy forests. Once we arrive at the farm — watch out! Reindeer might pop up everywhere!

Reindeer Experience

At the farm, the guide will explain in detail how sacred reindeer are to the Sami culture and their relationship throughout the centuries. Following all the instructions you receive, you’ll be able to feed, interact, and even play with them.

Did you know their noses have built-in "heaters"? A curious fact you’ll notice if you get close enough!

Sami Culture

To complete your Tromso experience, the guide will introduce you to a traditional Sami family who will share stories and fun facts. Their colorful clothing will amaze you!

You’ll also discover the traditional “lasso throwing” technique — how the Sami catch and guide their reindeer.

Finally, you’ll enter a heated cabin where you’ll enjoy a local snack and a warm drink.

To wrap it up, you'll take a photo with the Sami and the reindeer, which will be emailed to you the next day. A memorable moment!

Return to Tromso

The entire experience lasts 3 hours. Afterward, we’ll head back to Tromso so you can rest at your accommodation. We’re sure reindeer will become your favorite animal from now on.

What to bring to Reindeer Tromso + Sami Camp tour

Tromso is located on one of the islands in the Norwegian Sea and has a cold, humid climate all year round, with below-zero temperatures in the winter months (November–March). As with all Nordic climates, you will need warm clothing, preferably thermal. Here’s a summary of essentials for visiting Norway any time of the year:

Where does the tour Reindeer Tromso + Sami Camp start

Our meeting point is at the Magic Ice Bar in Tromso, where the bus will pick you up at the scheduled time.

Tromso has an international airport, so depending on your country of origin, you may be able to arrive directly. It is also a small city, so getting around is easy. If you arrive first in Oslo or Bergen, you can also take a domestic flight that lasts approximately 2 hours. There is no train service to Tromso from those cities.

    Although this is a family tour, and very suitable for children, the minimum age is 6 years old.

  • Does the tour include a reindeer sleigh ride?

    No, this tour does not include the sleigh ride as it is focused on interacting directly with the reindeer and discovering the Sami culture.

  • Are reindeer dangerous animals?

    No, reindeer (even male reindeer) are tame animals. In addition, the reindeer on the farm are domesticated so there is no risk. However, we ask you to always keep a respectful attitude with them following the guide's instructions to avoid any incident.

  • Does the tour include food?

    Yes, before the end of the tour, you can enjoy a local snack and hot and cold drinks inside the air-conditioned cabin.

  • Does the tour include transfer service?

    Yes, on the outward journey you will have to go to the meeting point where the transport will be waiting for you. For the return, the transfer will be directly to your accommodation.
