✨ Highlights: High Atlas, Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, and the Dades Valley

Departure from Marrakech and a tour through the High Atlas Mountains

At 8:00 AM, your guide will pick you up at your lodging in Marrakech, and you’ll begin your journey by private vehicle toward southern Morocco.

You’ll leave the city behind and head into the High Atlas, traveling along mountain roads and through small Berber villages until you reach the Tizi n’Tichka Pass. Along the way, you’ll make several stops to rest, take in the scenery, and snap some photos before continuing on to Ait Ben Haddou.

Visit to Ait Ben Haddou

After crossing the High Atlas Mountains, you’ll arrive at Ait Ben Haddou, one of the most iconic sites along the route. You’ll have about 1 hour to explore this adobe ksar, stroll through its narrow streets, and enjoy the views of the surrounding area.

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ait Ben Haddou is also known for having served as a filming location for productions such as Game of Thrones and Gladiator. After the visit, you’ll continue the tour toward Ouarzazate.

Please note that lunch is not included in the tour, so you can bring a picnic lunch from Marrakech or ask your guide for recommendations on where to eat at one of the local restaurants.

You’ll then continue on to the Dades Valley, passing through some of the iconic landscapes of southern Morocco.

In the morning, you can go sandboarding, using the boards available at the camp to glide down the dunes on your own and at your own pace.

If you’d like to add a little more adventure, you can book a guided ATV tour through the desert, available as an optional activity when you make your reservation. You can combine it with sandboarding, as both activities can be done on the same morning.

Once the activities are over, you’ll return to the camp for your included breakfast, pick up your luggage, and continue the journey to Rissani.

Rissani and a tour of the Draa Valley

You’ll leave Merzouga behind and arrive in Rissani, where—if it happens to be one of the days the market is open—you’ll visit its traditional market. Afterward, you’ll continue on your way through Alnif and N’Kob, a Berber village surrounded by palm groves.

The journey will continue through the Draa Valley, among vast palm groves and ancient ksars, before crossing the Ait Saouen Mountains and arriving in Ouarzazate. There, you’ll have dinner and spend the night in a riad.

The visit to the Rissani market is subject to its opening days. If it is closed, the itinerary will continue so you can enjoy more time in Merzouga.

💙 Howlanders Tip: If your visit coincides with market day in Rissani, bring some cash in dirhams. The souk is organized into different sections with stalls selling local products, spices, dates, and handicrafts, and many of them only accept cash.

Questions & Answers

4 Days Tour from Marrakech to Merzouga with Hotel & Glamping

  • Where does the 4-day tour to the Merzouga Desert begin and end?

The tour begins in Marrakech, where the guide will pick you up at your lodging at 8:00 AM. On the fourth day, you'll return to Marrakech and arrive around 3:00 PM, ending the tour at your accommodation.

  • Is it necessary to travel into the desert by camel?

No. The camel ride is part of the experience, but it's not mandatory. If you'd rather not do it, you can reach the camp by 4x4 vehicle at no additional cost.

  • What are the accommodations like on the 4-day trip to the Merzouga Desert?

On the first night, you’ll stay at a 3-star hotel with air conditioning in the Dades Valley. This will typically be the Hôtel Babylon Dadès or the Grand Canyon Lodge Dades, depending on availability. You’ll have a private room with a private bathroom.

On the second night, you’ll stay at a glamping site in the heart of the Merzouga Desert. The camp features private tents equipped with air conditioning, heating, and electricity, as well as a private bathroom. Your stay includes a traditional Moroccan dinner, which will be served in an air-conditioned restaurant within the camp.

On the third night, you’ll stay at a riad in Ouarzazate—usually the Riad Merzouga Dunes—where you’ll have a private room with a private bathroom.

All accommodations have electricity and a private bathroom with hot water. They are subject to availability; if they are not available, alternative accommodations of a similar category and standard will be provided.

  • Can I go on an ATV tour through the Merzouga dunes?

Yes! On the morning of the third day of the tour, you’ll have the opportunity to take a guided ATV tour through the Erg Chebbi dunes, available as an optional activity.

This experience can be combined with sandboarding, so you can enjoy both activities on the same morning. The duration of the ATV tour is flexible and can be booked by the hour, depending on your preferences and the schedule for the day.

You can add the ATV tour directly on the booking form and complete your adventure in the Moroccan desert.

  • Is the Rissani market open every day?

The traditional market in Rissani is held on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. If your visit coincides with one of these days, you'll stop by to explore it during the third day's itinerary.

  • Can I end my trip in Fez instead of returning to Marrakech?

Yes! If your trip through Morocco continues on to Fez, you can choose our 4-day tour to the Merzouga Desert from Marrakech to Fez.

This itinerary will allow you to discover some of Morocco’s most iconic sites, enjoy a night in the Merzouga Desert, and connect Marrakech and Fez—two of the country’s most important cities—on a four-day tour.

  • How is this tour different from the 3-day excursion to the Merzouga Desert?

The 4-day tour offers a more comprehensive and leisurely itinerary. After visiting Merzouga, the return trip to Marrakech is spread over two days, with the third night spent in Ouarzazate and stops at places like Rissani, N’Kob, and the Draa Valley.

This way, the number of hours spent on the road in a single day is reduced, and you’ll have more time to enjoy the various stops along the route.

  • What kind of vehicle is used?

The tour is conducted in private transportation, typically an air-conditioned minivan with a capacity of up to 8 passengers, in addition to the driver-guide.

For groups of more than 8 people, a larger vehicle, such as a private minibus, is used so that all travelers can take the tour and visit the sites together, accompanied by the same driver-guide.

  • Are tours and admission tickets included in the price?

Most of the tour's stops are at scenic overlooks, traditional villages, valleys, and natural areas that do not require an admission fee.

However, some optional stops, such as a tour inside the Atlas Studios in Ouarzazate or visits to certain monuments and museums, may have an admission fee that is not included in the tour price.

Since this is a private tour, you can discuss your preferences with the driver-guide to tailor the stops based on the time available and the itinerary.
