Tasman Glacier Heli Hike
Total duration: 3 hours
Time on ice: 2 hours
Required ftitness level: low/moderate
Previous experience required: none
Check-in at Operating Base - Aoraki/Mount Cook Airport
The experience begins at Aoraki / Mount Cook Airport, located approximately 3.7 miles (6 km) from Mount Cook Village.
Please arrive at the operations base inside* the airport 20 minutes before your scheduled departure time to complete check-in.
On arrival, you will check in with the team, who will verify your documentation, provide your equipment, and deliver a full safety briefing before you board the helicopter.
*Transfers from accommodation are not included. However, you can reach the airport by car or via the regional bus network, which operates regular services between the main towns.

Scenic Helicopter Flight to the Tasman Glacier
This is where the adventure begins: you’ll board a helicopter for a 15-minute scenic flight over the breathtaking landscapes of the Southern Alps. Along the way, you’ll enjoy privileged views of glacial valleys, ice-carved rivers, and rugged peaks, including Mount Cook, New Zealand’s highest mountain. As you enter the heart of the national park, the helicopter descends into a remote area of the Tasman Glacier, where you’ll land directly on the ice to begin your guided hike.
Helicopter operations are conducted by certified New Zealand companies that comply with strict safety standards and operate under closely monitored weather conditions. Flights are piloted by highly experienced professionals specializing in alpine environments.

Guided Hike on the Tasman Glacier
After landing and gearing up, the second part of the adventure begins: you’ll set off on a guided hike across the Tasman Glacier, walking on the ice as you explore crevasses, seracs, and ever-changing natural formations. Along the route, your guide will adapt the itinerary to the group’s conditions and share insights into how the glacier is formed and how it continues to evolve over time. You may also see the guide carving steps into the ice to safely navigate certain sections.
In summer, crampons are provided and fitted to your boots. During the winter months, you may use crampons, snowshoes for softer snow conditions, or a combination of both depending on the terrain.
In total, time spent on the Tasman Glacier ice can be up to 2 hours, depending on weather conditions and group safety.
💡 HOWLANDERS TIP : Wear multiple layers and don’t forget sun protection. Even on the glacier, UV exposure is very strong at altitude, and weather conditions can change rapidly within minutes.

Scenic Helicopter Flight over the Tasman Glacier – Return to Mount Cook and End of Tour
After completing your glacier hike, you’ll return to the landing site to board the helicopter for your flight back. The return journey, approximately 15 minutes, offers one final opportunity to take in sweeping panoramic views of the Tasman Glacier and surrounding alpine landscape from the air.
You’ll land at the base of Mount Cook, where a transfer will take you back to the airport. This marks the end of your Tasman Glacier tour.

Questions & Answers
Is there a minimum number of people for the Tasman Glacier Heli Hike?
Yes, 4 people are required for this excursion to take place.
If your group is less than 4 people, we will do our best to join you on an outing with other participants. If the minimum number is not reached, private excursions can be arranged at an additional cost.
What is considered a low/moderate fitness level?
You are considered to be in low to moderate physical condition if you can walk up and down a flight of stairs without holding on to the handrail and walk at a moderate pace, with stops, for up to 2 hours.
At some times, it may be necessary to walk up or down steeper steps using a handrail to maintain balance.
What happens if I am late for the tour departure?
Please make sure you allow enough time to travel safely to the operating base at Aoraki / Mount Cook Airport. The route is spectacularly beautiful, and you may want to make some stops along the way.
We have strict safety briefing and flight scheduling schedules, so we cannot delay your departure if you are late. Failure to show up on time will be considered a forfeiture of the tour and will still be charged, as your place has been reserved specifically for you.
What happens if my tour is cancelled due to bad weather?
Excursions are dependent on weather conditions. Being an alpine environment in Aoraki / Mount Cook, the weather is very changeable and therefore unpredictable.
For this reason, the final decision on the weather for each departure is made 10 minutes before departure time.
If conditions are not suitable for flying and your tour is cancelled, a refund will be issued. Alternatively, if you prefer to change to another departure time, it is possible if there is availability.
