Wilmot Pass Bus Tour
You will disembark at West Arm and board a coach for a 45-minute journey over the spectacular Wilmot Pass, climbing to an elevation of 2,200 feet (671 meters) through dense rainforest.
The road winds through towering mountains and, when conditions allow, offers breathtaking views over Pātea Doubtful Sound (the Māori name for the fjord). On clear days, the panoramic scenery is unforgettable; in misty weather, the fjord takes on a more mysterious and atmospheric beauty.
There will be a stop along the way to take photos and enjoy the surrounding nature.

Lake Manapouri Crossing
This is where the excitement begins: you will board a ferry for a scenic 45-minute cruise across Lake Manapouri, dotted with small islands. This peaceful journey offers spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and lush native vegetation, giving you a first glimpse of the wild nature that awaits ahead.

Doubtful Sound Fjord Cruise
After disembarking the coach, the most anticipated part of your journey begins: a 2.5-hour cruise through the pristine waters of Pātea Doubtful Sound, a fjord that is three times longer and ten times larger than Milford Sound. You’ll sail aboard a catamaran designed for maximum comfort and panoramic views of this untouched wilderness.
Depending on the day and season, you may spot dolphins, seals, or, with a bit of luck, the rare Fiordland crested penguin. Throughout the cruise, your nature guide will share insights into the flora, fauna, and geology of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
While on board, you can relax on the spacious outdoor decks or in the comfortable indoor lounge. Food and drinks are available for purchase at the bar, including seasonal lunch boxes (pre-booked) and cheese platters, all while taking in the ever-changing scenery.
💡 HOWLANDERS TIP: Don’t stay inside the vessel the whole time—head out onto the open decks whenever possible. In Doubtful Sound, the scenery changes constantly, and being outside lets you truly experience the scale of the fjord and its waterfalls.

Return to Manapouri
You will travel back through Wilmot Pass once again, enjoying another scenic drive, followed by a return ferry journey across Lake Manapouri. This is another opportunity to take in the spectacular scenery, diverse wildlife, and untouched wilderness.
Upon arrival, you will disembark at the Manapouri Visitor Centre, where your Doubtful Sound cruise comes to an end.
If you have selected the Queenstown return option, you will board a minibus at the end of the tour for your transfer back to Queenstown.
If you have selected the Te Anau return option, you will board a minibus at the end of the excursion for your transfer back to Te Anau.
