Briefing

Live a unique experience in one of the most remote corners of New Zealand: the Doubtful Sound fjord. Unlike a day cruise, this Doubtful Sound Overnight Cruise allows you to fully immerse yourself in nature by spending a night aboard a traditional-style vessel.

The tour begins with a ferry crossing on Lake Manapouri, followed by a coach journey through Wilmot Pass, before entering the fjord. From there, you’ll explore its most spectacular corners all the way to the Tasman Sea on a classic-style ship, equipped with all modern comforts.

During your stay, you will enjoy full board. The onboard chef ensures a high-quality dining experience, including freshly prepared snacks, local produce platters, a gourmet buffet dinner, and a selection of hot and continental breakfasts.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can take part in activities such as kayaking along the shoreline or joining a guided small tender boat excursion. Throughout the journey, a specialist nature guide will provide commentary on the region’s unique environment.

    • From Queenstown, the journey takes approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes by car or bus.
    • From Te Anau, the travel time is about 30 minutes.
  • What is the weather like in Fiordland?

Fiordland's climate is what gives the region its unique character. The rain is responsible for making it a land of lakes, rivers, waterfalls and fjords. It is advisable to always be prepared for rain and to wear clothing suitable for cool and wet weather.

    Approximate seasonal temperatures are:

    • Summer (Dec-Feb): 19-23 °C

    • Spring (Sep-Nov): 10-19 °C
  • Is it worth visiting Doubtful Sound in the rain?

Many say you haven't seen Fiordland if you haven't seen it in the rain. When it rains, the scenery becomes even more spectacular: the waterfalls intensify, the mist envelops the mountains and the rivers rush down. From the comfort of the boat or bus, it's an incredible sight.

  • What are the chances of seeing wildlife in Fiordland?

Although it cannot be guaranteed, it is common to see seals. Doubtful Sound is home to a pod of bottlenose dolphins, so there is a chance of seeing them. The rare Fiordland crested penguin can sometimes be sighted.

  • What is included in the picnic lunch box available for purchase as an extra?

Made daily with local artisanal products, each box includes a deli sandwich, quiche, kumara chips and, to finish, a sweet pastry and fruit. Orders must be placed by 8:00 p.m. the day before the cruise.

Twin cabins offer the best privacy for traveling with family and children. A twin room is a private room for two people with two single beds.

    Yes, but specific conditions apply:

Children aged 2–15 years may share a cabin with an adult. Children must be accompanied by an adult and a twin-Share Cabin adult fare must be added per child.

Infants aged 0–23 months may only travel in:

    • A Twin-Share Cabin with two paying adult guests, or

One adult and one infant cannot be booked together in a Twin-Share or Double Cabin, as these cabins require two paying guests. Infants do not count as paying guests.

Note: quad-share cabins are mixed gender.

  • Will I be sharing a quad room?

There is a possibility that you might share a quad room with other customers, and it’s important to note these rooms are equipped with a curtain partition instead of a door. Please be aware of this configuration when booking and please contact us if you need further clarification.

  • How much luggage can I take on my overnight cruise?

It is recommended that each passenger carry a maximum of one carry-on size bag due to cabin space limitations. For a list of what to bring, please see the "what to bring" section.

  • Are dietary requirements met?

Yes, it is possible. Please provide detailed information about your dietary needs when booking.

  • Is the boat accessible for people with reduced mobility?

However, it is important to note that ships are not optimally equipped for possible accessibility needs. Although people with reduced mobility are welcome, it is important to know that all doors on the ship have a maritime threshold, there are no ramps inside the ship and there is a flight of stairs separating the rooms from the main salon.
