Boarding and Cruising Aboard the Superyacht

Come aboard a 108-feet (33 m) luxury catamaran. During the 90-minute cruise to the outer reef, the crew will conduct a safety briefing, organize the dive groups, and the PADI instructors will provide the theory session in the dive lounge, which is equipped with instructional screens. Passengers on the superyacht's special diving platform.

First stop: dive at Norman Reef or Saxon Reef

We’ll arrive at the first outer reef of the day, selected that morning for its optimal visibility and marine life (usually Norman Reef or Saxon Reef). Next, you’ll split into groups:

  • Beginner divers: You’ll get geared up in the boarding area and enter the water via the submersible hydraulic platform. In small groups (maximum of 4 people per PADI instructor), you’ll complete your first dive, lasting about 30 minutes, to a maximum depth of 40 ft (12 m).
  • Certified divers: You’ll descend with your assigned buddy or an expert guide to explore coral walls, passageways, and marine gardens teeming with life on a dive lasting about 40 to 45 minutes.
  • Non-divers: You’ll be provided with full gear and wetsuits for snorkeling on the reef.

💡 Howlanders Tip: Help us preserve this unique ecosystem. Do not touch the coral, and keep a safe distance from marine animals.

Questions & Answers

Great Barrier Reef Diving Tour from Cairns

  • What happens if the weather is bad on the day of the tour?

Don't worry about the weather on the coast. In Cairns, clouds and rain tend to be concentrated in the mountains. Since our dives take place on the outer reef (about 40 km offshore), the sky is usually clear. Even if it’s raining in the city at dawn, the underwater conditions and visibility on the Great Barrier Reef are usually ideal for diving.

  • When is the best time of year to go scuba diving in Cairns?

Any time of year offers fantastic diving conditions, with tropical waters that rarely drop below 75 ºF (24 °C). However, the period between April and November stands out for its excellent visibility. In addition, following the full moon in November or December, you can witness the natural phenomenon of mass coral spawning, an incredible event known as the “underwater snowfall.”

  • What is the difference between booking in advance and booking dives on board?

By booking your diving package in advance, you secure your spot and save money compared to the rates charged for on-board purchases. In addition, spots for introductory and guided dives are limited each day.

  • Is it essential to know how to swim if I book this scuba diving tour?

To participate in scuba diving trips to the Great Barrier Reef from Cairns (both introductory and certified) , you must know how to swim and feel comfortable in the water. For companions who are only snorkeling, we provide life jackets and flotation devices free of charge.

Please note that the boat anchors in open water on the outer reef, and there is no shallow water where you can stand at any time.

  • What are the minimum and maximum ages for scuba diving?

    • Introductory Dive: Minimum age 12.
    • Certified diving: Minimum age 10 years (must be accompanied by a parent, guardian, or private guide).
  • Do I need to bring my own wetsuit or prescription goggles?

That's not necessary. The tour includes wetsuit or lycra rental for all divers at no additional cost. In addition, we have prescription diving masks (from -2.5 to -8.0 diopters) available to borrow for free (a refundable deposit is required).

  • How do I get into the water if I'm a beginner?

Unlike other boats, our superyacht features a spacious hydraulic platform at the stern that lowers to water level and is equipped with retractable side wings. This allows for a gradual and comfortable entry into the water, preventing crowding and sudden jumps from a height.

  • What are the requirements for scuba diving?

    • Health Questionnaire: All participants must complete a mandatory medical declaration on board. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, or heart conditions) or take regular medication, you may need prior medical approval.
    • Participants 65 years of age or older: You must present a certificate signed by your doctor certifying that you are fit to dive.
    • Certification for Certified Divers: You must present your valid international diving certification.
    • Waiting Period Before Flying: For decompression safety, you must wait between 12 and 24 hours after your last dive before boarding a commercial flight.
    • Refund Policy: No refunds will be issued for dives that are voluntarily not completed.
  • Can I order photos or videos of my underwater experience?

Yes, there's a professional underwater photographer on board who captures your best moments underwater. Plus, on the boat you can rent professional underwater cameras or buy special waterproof cases to use your own cell phone underwater.

  • Can I go on a third dive on the same day?

If you are a certified diver and would like to make a third dive during the stop at the second reef (Hastings Reef), you can sign up for it directly on board that same day, subject to availability and decompression time requirements.

  • Which dive sites and reefs are visited?

We select our dive sites each morning based on water visibility and wind conditions. We usually make our first stop and do our morning dives at Norman Reef or Saxon Reef, and in the afternoon we head to Hastings Reef to round out the day’s diving.

  • Are there other activities I can do on the Great Barrier Reef?

  • What is the food like on board? Are there options for people with dietary restrictions?

You’ll enjoy a freshly cooked barbecue-style lunch on board that includes meat, fish, shrimp, a variety of tropical salads, and vegetarian or vegan options.

Important notice: We offer options tailored to gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian, and vegan diets. If you require a special or vegan menu, you must request it at least 48 hours in advance. In addition, we recommend that vegan travelers bring their own snacks for the morning and afternoon.

  • What payment methods can I use while browsing?

For any additional purchases at the onboard bar, photographs, or extra services, we accept cash and major credit and debit cards (VISA, Mastercard, and American Express).

  • Is the superyacht equipped to accommodate passengers with limited mobility or who use wheelchairs?

Boarding availability and accessibility on board depend on tide conditions, sea conditions, and the day’s operational safety protocols. If you need special assistance or accessibility accommodations, please contact us before booking the tour,

  • How many people can ride on the boat?

You'll sail aboard a superyacht with a capacity of 160 passengers. With its three open-air decks and two air-conditioned interior lounges, the vessel offers a spacious and comfortable environment for all travelers.
