2 Days in El Calafate Glacier Trek Experience

El Calafate → Puerto Bajo las Sombras

You will be picked up at your accommodation in El Calafate at 7:00 AM and you will head towards Puerto Bajo las Sombras, in Los Glaciares National Park. In case you did not include the extra "transfers minitrekking" you will meet the guide at the entrance of the Park.

Rico Lake Navigation

Once at the port, you will board the boat that crosses Lago Rico. 20 minutes later you will disembark on the opposite shore in front of the south face of the Perito Moreno Glacier. You will arrive at the refuge where you will be greeted by a team of professional guides.

Minitrekking Perito Moreno

You will start the trek with a walk along the shore of the lake. Afterwards, the guides will give a talk on safety and glaciology.

Upon arrival at the edge of the glacier, subgroups of a maximum of 20 travelers will be organized, each accompanied by two professional guides. With their help, you will put on your helmet and crampons. And your ice walk on the Perito Moreno Glacier will begin.

Return to Puerto Bajo las Sombras

At the end of the walk (approximately one hour) on the ice, you will walk through the periglacial area and the lateral moraine. Then you will return to the refuge through a path that crosses the Andean Patagonian forest.

Upon arrival, a hot drink and a small surprise will be waiting for you. After this break, you will embark again to return to the Lower Port of Shadows.

Perito Moreno Footbridges

You will board the minibus and head to El Calafate. On the way, 7km from the port, you will stop at the Perito Moreno footbridges. Here you will have a one hour guided tour. 

After admiring the glacier for the last time, you will get back on the minibus that will take you to your accommodation in El Calafate.

• The difficulty of the tour is moderate. The ice surface on which you will walk is uneven but firm and safe.

Pick up at your hotel - Los Glaciares National Park

El Calafate Boat Tour to the Glaciers begins with pick up at your hotel in El Calafate. Depending on the location of the hotel, you will be picked up from 7:00 am. Once the group is assembled, you will head to Los Glaciares National Park.

After 47 kilometers by road, you will arrive at the park and buy the entrance ticket to Los Glaciares National Park with the help of your guide.

La Soledad Port

Once inside the park, you will go to the private port La Soledad.

You will embark on a large catamaran that has four outdoor decks to comfortably observe the Lago Argentino. The boat also has a VIP area with a private outdoor deck.

Upsala Glacier and Canal

You will find the largest ice floes in the park.

Upsala is the second largest glacier in South America. The detachments are so huge, that for safety reasons the boat will not go within 10 kilometers of it.

Heim and Seco Glaciers

You will continue sailing and come across the hanging glaciers. These are the Heim and Seco glaciers, which are so named because they are hanging from the mountain without touching the water of Lake Argentino.

Puesto de las Vacas

You will get off the boat at Puesto de las Vacas and take a leisurely hike coordinated by the team of guides.

Puesto de las Vacas is an old Patagonian estancia located in the heart of the National Park. Here you will encounter horses, old houses and other creations of Patagonian pioneers.

Speggazzini Glacier - Lunch on Board

The Speggazzini glacier is impressive no matter how you look at it. The overhanging part of the lake has a height of 130 meters. It is almost twice as high as the Perito Moreno glacier. If the cold makes you hungry, this is your moment: food! Get ready to taste a Patagonian lamb sandwich accompanied by baked vegetables.

If you choose the premium room as an extra, you will enjoy a special four-course menu: two starters, main course and dessert. In both cases, drinks are included during the meal. In the premium room, in addition, you have an open bar during the entire Glaciares Gourmet experience.

Canal de Los Témpanos (Icebergs Channel)

The navigation continues through the Canal de Los Témpanos until reaching the northern part of the Perito Moreno Glacier.

End of the El Calafate Boat Tour to the Glaciers

All good things come to an end, arriving back to La Soledad port.

Once at the port, the minibus will be waiting to take you back to your hotel. You will arrive in the city around 7:00 p.m.
